Biddy Quint,
Wofford Pups
Meet At 6:30
Carolina's basketball Gamecocks
will kick the lid off their 26-game
1956-57 campaign tomorrow, meet
ing the Wofford Terriers in their
traditional intra-state conflict at
the University Field House. Game
time is 8 p.m.
Coach Frank Johnson will reveal
the '56-'57 edition, possibly Caro
lina's best since World War II,
after the Biddie quint tangles with
the Wofford Pups beginning at
6:30 p.m.
Coach Johnson has been drilling
his charges daily for about five
weeks in preparation for their
rugged schedule that includes 14
Atlantic Coast Conference encoun
ters.
Wallace Is Captain
He will rely heavily on the ca
pabilities of senior and captain
Grady Wallace who led the Birds
in scoring last season with a 23.9
per game scoring average. Wal
lace had a .448 shooting accuracy
from the floor and a .758 mark
from the free throw line. Also, he
was second to the graduated Lee
Collins in rebounding and was
named to the All-ACC second
team.
According to Johnson, the start
ing quint will be rounded out by
Dick Hoffman, opposite Wallace
at the forward positions, Fred
Lentz at center, and Bobby Mc
Coy and Ray (Cookie) Pericola at
the guard posts. Wallace and Mc
Coy are both returning lettermen,
while Hoffman, Lentz and Peri
cola are sophomores up from last
year's classy freshman five.
Reserves to See Action
Front line reserves who should
see plenty of action against the
Terriers are, Art Smejkal and
Marshall Perkins, forwards; Don
Goodroe, center; and Dean Crain
and Wayne Godfrey, guards.
The varsity squad also includes
such capable performers as Lee
Anderson and Joe Granger, for
wards; Bill Andress, center; and

Johnson, stepping into his 14th
season as basketball coach for
South Carolina, thinks the team's
fortunes have an excellent chance
to rise, in accordance with the per
formance of his sophomores. Each
has been impressive in pre-season
practice. They lack experience in
the rigorous Atlantic Coast Con
ference, ". . . however, we've had
the advantage of half a month
added to our regular workout
period, due to the elimination of
spriing practice. A couple of
games under the belt should make
a big difference," Johnson said.
Two New Jersey Men
Pericola and Hoffman, both of
Union City, N. J., have worked to
gether on the hardwood through
seven seasons of basketball, and
this could result in one of the
smoothest two-man mechanisms
Carolina fans have been intro
duced to. They respectively aver
aged 20.1 and 19.4 points as fresh
men.
Assuming the man-sized pivot
position vacated by Collins rests
with 6'8" Lentz of Asheville.

scored 10.0 points per game for
the frosh last year.
Coach Joel Robertson's Terriers
have only two men returning from
last winter's starting five and
only a handful of lettermen. How
ever, the visitors will have one
advantage over the locals in that
they open their season tonight
against Catawba.
In the preliminary' game, assist
ant coach Walter Hamrick will
put a freshman team on the floor
averaging 6'6". Starting for the
Biddies will be, Bury Hudson, 6'5",

Play Duke Dec. 5
Following tomorrow night's
game, the Gamecocks will travel
to Charlotte Dec. 5 for their first
ACC encounter of the season
against the Duke Blue Devils.
