Night Clo Rules On Jt By Bill Black Staff Writer Approximately 25 to 45 stu dents gather weekly Monday, Wed nesday, and Friday in Rooms 118 and 119 of the Business Adminis tration Building to receive tutoring assistance in freshman English and mathematics under the direc tion of W. Joseph Williams, an advance (graduate) student of Carolina, and Bill Nicholson of the School of Law. The tutoring system of Caro lina is designed to aid freshmen students having difficulty in Eng lish and mathematics. Classes Successful According to Williams, the class is progressing very successfully, and since the tutoring system was established here four years ago, has proved to be very successful. Students who conscientiously and consistently attend the English lectures seldom fail their English courses. In European colleges and universities the role of the tutor is one of vast importance, especi ally in Italy, England, France, and even Germany. There the tutor actually lives with the freshmen students, super vising their manners, besides help ing formulate their philosophical and academic educations. George Curry, assistant professor of history at the Uni versity, will present a report to the British Studies Association, holding an all-day meeting tomor row in New York City. Carolina's inception of the tu toring system began four years ago, and is sponsored by the Uni versity. Dr. Havilah Babcock, head of the English Department, and Dr. W. L. Williams, head of the Mathematics Department, ex press similar views regarding the success of the tutoring program here at Carolina. 'Good Idea' Freshman Arthur Dodd of Spar tanburg said the English tutoring has helped him considerably and feels that it is a good idea to have tutoring classes for students in his predicament. He said he had failed to learn the fundamen tals of English properly in high school, which was the basis for his difficulty with English here. Math Offered Mathematics instructions, like the English, is primarily for use by freshmen students and offers a program of assistance to the level of analytical geometry. Students in need of tutoring in English should contact Dr. Havilah Babcock or W. Joseph Williams of the English Department; Mathe matics students should contact Dr. W. L. Williams of the Mathematics Department, or Bill Nicholson, of the Law School, for information regarding the tutoring classes.
