Coach Johnson was greeted by ght returnees from the '55-'66 am plus members of last year's eshman quint and a host of wcomers. Leading the returnees e captain and All-Conference rady Wallace, Bobby McCoy, rt Smejkal and Dean Crain. These four, along with Joe ranger and Marshall Perkins, e the only lettermen on the und. On the other side of the ledger, ese are gone from the '55-'56 lition that garnered nine wins in outings and won the mythical ate championship-Lee Collins, mnie Fannin, Dave Neilson, Russ >rter, Sol Richardson, Jack eely and Woody Preston. Collins led the team in rebounds st season, snaring over 300 for i average of over 18 per game. e was second in scoring with 19-point average. Taylor Sports Writer The Carolina Biddies met the Ike Blue Imps in a cold, wind )wn Carolina Stadium last Fri ,y night and lost a hard-fought, -6, football contest to the North Lrolina invaders. The Biddies, who lost 6-0, to e Wake Forest Baby Deacons in eir opening game, again showed lod hustle and spirit, but imerous mistakes hurt their ances of victory. Fumbles and porous pass defense were the ajor reasons for their downfall. Looking good again for the ddies was their scholastic All l1erica fullback, John Saunders. sse Smarr, former Columbia gh great, added offensive punch the losing cause. Park Turner, taking over the arterback post when Tom Stuart as moved to end, turned in a ie job of signal-calling. Outstanding Biddie linemen in e Duke game were guard Ken wrieso and ends Walt Latoree d Doug Hatcher. A glance at the records attained last season by those available for the '66-'57 campaign should take Coach Johnson's attention away rrom the so-called "crying towel." Wallace, Smejkal and McCoy were Dn the starting five and Crain, Perkins and Granger saw consid erable action. Wallace led the Gamecock five in scoring witli a 25-point average and was second only to Collins in ,he rebounding department with 11 per game. Smejkal had a habit Af scoring at the most opportune moments and finished the season with a five-point average, how wer, his greatest asset to the :lub was his rebounding strength. McCoy, ball-handler par excellence, was third in the team's scoring with a 13-point average. Sophomores Should Help Another reason why Coach fohnson should smile when think ng of the approaching season is ,he fine crop of sophomores up Prom last year's freshman team that won 12 contests in 17 outings. Bidding for starting births on the amecock quint, along with their scoring averages for the fresh nan team are: Pericola, 20.1; 4offman, 19.4; Grabow, 14.9; Lentz, 14.9; and Goodroe, 10. Godfrey, who led the Western ;arolinas Junior College confer mce in scoring last year with an iverage in the vicinity of 30 )oints, should give someone a real ,crap for one of the backcourt osts on the Gamecock quint. His wo-year average while at Spar anburg Junior was in excess of 0 points. Drown and gri n...s-,- Mn',s S Freshmen Emphasizes New Look By Dale Hawkinson Special Writer Last Monday the "new look" in freshman basketball appeared on the hardwood under the direction of frosh cage mentor Walter Hambrick. Hambrick, who came to Carolina last year from Pikes ville Junior College in Kentuck7 sent his charges through an :b tensive workout at the first prac tice session Monday afternoon. Leading the new crop in height is Larry Dial, 19-year-old center, who towers 6'10%" skyward. Backing up Dial at the center position will be Freddie Luigs, 18, who stands 6'4". The forward positions will probably be held down by former Dreher High School stars, Walt and Bury Hudson. Walt who is 18 years old, stands 6'5%" And Bury, also 18, stands 6'6". Ether, however, could be switched to the center or guard positions with ease as they both are capable of holding down any position on the team. Mike Callahan, 20, standing 6'6", will give Coach Hambrick more of the all important height which is needed for a winning team. At the guard positions three men will be fighting for the start ing berths. Bob Graves and Dan Morgan seem to have the inside track to the backeourt positions although Marvin Gregory could give them quite a battle for a starting assignment. Other boys who showed plenty of hustle at the first practice were, forwards Gerald Raper, Jim Macedon, Jack Brown; and guards Dalton Floyd, John Timmerman, Bill Crowlley and Bob Smith.
