Thi football fortunes at the Baptis Hollow are on the up and it wa; certainly no disgrace to lose t such a vastly improved team. Coach Baskin said that ne wa pleased with the team's defenst but added that the locals' offen sive punch was lacking in the con test that could easily have gon either way. Fullback John Saunders, seholastic all - American fror Churchland, Va., did most of th running for the Biddies, leadinj drives that carried to the Dea cons' 20 and eight-yard lines. But on each occasion the Wake Fores defense held for possession. The brunt of the visitors' offen sive attack was carried by Brue Nunnally, a swift halfback wh returned a Bliddie punt in the fina stanza to set up the game's Ion touchdown. Tonight the Biddies will encoun ter a team that will be out t avenge their big brothers' 7-0 set back at the hands of the Game cocks ear'lier this year. The probable starting ,line-u) for tonight's game will be, Frei WVolfe and Doug Hatcher, ends Ed Fitts and Ernie Hux, tackles Kennith Akin and Jack Jones guards; Ted Hall, center; Ton * Stuart, quarterback; Jesse Smar and Jimmy Pritchett, halfbacks and Saunders, fullback. A. "Doc" Craw Sford, who bas been at the univer sity for 37 years and who coache< the first wrestling team in 192 some 28 years ago. Since this time, several attempt: have been made to reorganize a team but they have been to ac avail. It is the hope of Crawvfor< that 1956 will be a newv era il the wrestling field for South Car olina. It is the opinion of Craw ford that if the Gamecocks coul< come up with such a team thal other South Carolina school would follow suit. Series South Carolina's Gamecocks with a 2-0 conference record now on paper, will move to Richmond, Va., this weekend foi an ACC battle with Virginia's Cavaliers. Both the Gamecocks and the Virginians pulled "firsts" in their encounters last Saturday. South Carolina's triumph over the North Carolina Tar Heels followed a conference victory over Duke and marked the first time in history that a USC team has beaten both the Blue Devils and Tar Heels in the same season. Virginia's 7-6 decision over Wake Forest was the first conference victory for the Cavaliers since they became a member. The South Carolina - Virginia series dates from 1912, and while the Gamecocks have won frur of five contests since the rivalry was renewed in 1951, the Cavaliers' record of South Carolina con quests up to 1929 gives them au 8-4-0 series advantage. Like South Carolina, Virginia is an improved team and also like USC it has a new, young coach in Ben S. Martin, who shows prom ise of moving the Cavaliers up the ACC competition ladder. Mar tin came to Charlottesville from the Naval Academy where he was assistant coach.
