Seatins
We were not surprised to find out that
more problems have arisen in regard to the
football seating situation.
The reason we say that we are not sur
prised is because the ticket distribution plan
has been changed at least two times before
this latest proposed change.
We went on record in the Sept. 28 edition
of The Gamecock in favor of the then new
plan whereby a student would pick up his
football ticket sometime during the week
preceeding each of the remaining football
game played at home.
We would like to state again why we
thought that was a good plan.
First of all the new plan would get rid of
the long lines such as the ones before the
Duke game with the University. That line
situation was a very unpleasant one, and
we hope that Carolina students will not
have to experience such as that again.
Secondly, the new distribution system
gave seniors, law students and graduate
students first choice of the seats.
The Athletic Ticket Office received com
plaints last week from students concerned
with having to walk over to the tkket office
before each game to receive their tickets.
The Student Council Ticket Committee is
of the opinion that the tickets should be
given out twice more: once before thhe Clem
son game and again before the Maryland
game.
Dick Anderson stated that he received
more complaints than compliments last week
by students who were of the opinion that
tickets for the remainder of the season
should be given out at one time, making
remaining trips over to the ticket office
unnecessary for the remainder of the foot
ball season. He further stated that help
would be needed in his office for them to
be able to give out tickets separately for
the two remaining games. It is further

understood that the administration received
letters from parents complaining about their
students having to stand in lines so much
preceeding each game.
The Student Council Ticket Seating Com
mittee thinks the tickets should be given
out for the two remaining games separately.
A good argument that they have concerns
student dating at the games. They say that
students who date for the Clemson game
might not want to (late for the Maryland
game or might want to date another person
for the latter game. We must admit that
some inconveniences might arise. The com
mittee said they would help the athletic
office give out the two tickets, but this
would necessitate board of trustee action.
After trying to weigh both sides we have
come to the conclusion that both sides have
about equal weight.
Since either way the tickets are distri
buted will cause some students to complain
it seems logical to do the one that would
cause the least work on the part of the
ticket office and cause the least amount of
unhappiness on the part of the students.
But. do something that most of the stu
dents want. And stick with it.
We realize that this thing has been con
ducted on a more or less trial and error
basis. Such a proposed drastic change from
last year's seating plan would necessarily
cause some errors to be made.
We hope that the University will profit
by this year's experience.
The students should be recognized in any
plan that is drawn up for next year. About
the only way to recognize student wants is
by asking then. A good way to do this is
to poll the student body. We think they
should be given an active voice, whether it
be in an election or in some other way,
through The Gamecock for example.

"Oh, what a revoltin' develop
ment this is," could very well
have been, and was--the cry of
many outraged Carolina students
at the Fair Grounds stadium last
Saturday. And the same lament
was and could continue to be
apropos as we wait in line to
obtain our football tickets prior
to each game this fall.
The Student Council has
worked hard to come up with a
"workable" plan concerning ticket
distribution, but with a mis-fire
or two, plus a not-too-coopera
tive administration, there re
mains much to be desired.
The many changes, adjust
ments, or whatever you may
wish to label them, in the ticket
distribution procedure since last
year, were infered by this humble
scribe to have been designed to
avoid the transferring of student
ducats (Saints forbid) to "out
siders." Well now, what was
(lone at the stadium Saturday
to prevent said transferring?
Nothing! And not only have the
alterations failed to accomplish
that which was sought, but more
over they have succeeded, for the
most part, in creating one great
big sloppy mess of the situation.
At this time may we point out
that this bit of journalistic ef
fort Is not designed to frown
upon a student who chooses to
sell his tickets, but rather to
make an attempt to point out
some of the grave injustices that
have been dealt to most of the
Carolina students, and in some
respects, an inconvenience to all
students at Carolina.
What we would like to knowv

last year's p)rocedure that mari

this fall under a new manage

This in itself Is nothing
startling, as college newspapers
appear all the time under new

that. The reason for the change
in qluestion, however, interests
us.
It seems that when the board
of directors of the college made

found that over half of the
working staff had deficient
gradies. They also found that this
was partially due to the amount
of work that certain individuals
had to do because there were too

At Carolina in the past few years,
ut no definite program of the
kind has appeared.
Student Council has taken a
3tep towards providing one by
astablishing a student union
:ommittee to plan for and secure

until now has not formulated a

The program is an ambitious

Expensive Buildings
Sleek, expensive buildings, it
has been said of another school,
do not make a University a great
institution. Such presumptions
must not be allowed to be ap
plied to Carolina.
Nevertheless without the sti
mulating influences of well
informed persons and cultural
and artistic presentations that a
lecture and cultural series would
provide, we cannot dismiss with
honesty the threat of the icing
getting thicker than the cake.
For the benefit of freshmen
who perhaps haven't yet been
innured to the art of attracting
friends and influencing profes
sors, and for misguided upper
classmen who uphold the crit
erion of sedate conduct in class,
we've found a set of ideas de
signed to disgruntle the peda
gogues, if not shake them com
pletely.
An Oklahoma college writer
named Ed Turner has a theory
which he calls "classmanship."
Its object is to frustrate well
meaning professors to the point
that they'll want to quit as edu
cators and go to work writing
commercials for TV. The rules
are:
"First of all: always be late
to class. Upon entering NEVER
look meek or apologetic for
disturbing the (class. A ppear sur
prised that this section was
scheduled to meet at this time
or even look hurt that they could
go on without you."
Many an accomplished class
man has causedi the professor to
thumb quickly through his class
roll to see if perhaps they should
have met at 8:35 instead of 8:10.
D)isagree With Prof.
"Disagree openly with the
professor. An economic instruc
tor says in his most profound
aind sonorous tones: 'The
theories of Adam Smith are the
foundlationls of our modern sys
tem of economics.' You say in
an audlible whisper: 'But that's
so pas5se' . . . making him look
as if he had an 01(d pair of plus
fours and was shouting 2
skidoo instead of (delivering
lecture.w
"Leavemanship is another ef
fective gambit that will add
sparkle to every classroom.
About 10 minutes before the class
is over slam your books shut,
zip up your notebook, tuck your
pencil neatly in your pocket and
begin tapping your foot spas
modically, wvhistling to yourself,
if you are a poor whistler.
"At five minutes before the
hour, scoot upl on the edge of
your seat, alternating your gaze
between the wvall. elock and you~Er
watch, shouting 'X minus five,
X minus four, X minus three'
..right up until the end of the
hour."
