After reading your article in The Gamecock, I firmly agreed that the cheering was disgraceful at the Wofford USC ball game. I have come from a high school that had a wonderful cheering section and a great spirit. Several of my friends that graduated with me at my high school were surprised at the little cheering of a college as big as USC. As I am a freshman and not a cheerleader, I know that I can not get into the Pep Club. But I would like to help in making the University have a great spirit and building a great cheering section. In your article, you listed several students helping the Pep Club. I would like to be included in that group as a helper. Please do not hesitate to get in touch with me. Thank you. I enjoyed your article and I comend the cheerleaders for the wonderful job that they are doing and for what they are working for. -Bill Jones BOSSELER, SCARNECCHIA, AND HEAT Crushing Don Bosseler and Sam Scarnecchia the magi cian proved to be fatal in the Orange Bowl stadium last Fri day night. Coach Andy Gustafson's proteges were nothing short of magnificient during the course of the evening but it was left to an ace other than the Hurricanes to put the finishing touches on the valient Gamecocks, the heat and humidity. Coach Giese's men were very noticeably affected and it was undoubtably a factor in Miami's favor. Let's not take anything away from the Floridians though. They have a fine team. An organization with plenty of power deception, and football finess. They will be no weak sister for anyone invading their lair. As for the Gamecocks, they did a very good job under the conditions they faced. They had numerous men hurt during the evening which affected their performance. Penalties proved fatal at times, once when they were deep in Miami territory in the second quarter. Had the Birds scored then, the outcome could have been different. SECOND UNIT SHARP The entire team played good football but they were definitely not up to the peak performance of the previous week. The second unit, quarterbacked by Jack Hall, proved to be the more effective during the night. In Hall's backfield was the Bird's only man to reach the goal. Heyward King took a qjuick pitchout from Hall and scooted 10 yards for the score. The Gamecocks got possession of the ball at this time when an alert Weems Baskin intercepted a Scarnecchia pass. The determined 'Chickens' scored in just five plays with King showing the way. I might add too that this scoring drive was made against Miami's starting eleven. BATTLE OF CAROLINA'S Our football forces are now faced with the battle of the Carolinas. And what a battle it should be! A rumor is circ:ulating now that Jim Tatum has been practicing for this game for the past 10 or 12 days, completely disregarding p)ractice for the powerful "Sooners" from Oklahoma. 'Tis a known fact that 'Sunny' Jim wants the South Carolina game bad and will probably go to any extremes to get it. It is my opinion that the Tar Heels will be just as tough as Duke and probably more so due to the keen rivalry of the two schools in the past and now the intensity of the battle with coach and pupil opposing one another. The question arises now, just who was the coach at Maryland and who was the pupil. Tomorrow we shall see. QUOTES AND MIS-QUOTES The Miami trip was one long to remember. A bit of everything happened, interesting p)eople were met, seen, and heard. The kids were there at the gates, waiting and pleading. "Got an extra ticket, mister?" "He was from South Carolina," the guy protested to the police. "And he slugged me--he had no business slugging me-makes me mad-so I slugged him back, and you pick me up. How about that?" Miami Writer Cites U.S. C. Enthusiasm University of South Carolina students were praised by Miami sports writer Haines Colbert for their undying spirit displayed in the Orange bowl last Friday night. Haines' comment is as follows: "The South Carolina students and alumni, apparently still fired up from their teams' sur prise victory over Duke last week, provided the one exciting note. They completely drowned out the Miami partisans in the crowd of 44,184-a record for an opening night. Sophomore King Dixon, though held to 17 yards by Miami in Friday night's game, continues to lead South Carolina's yardage makers with 160 yards rushing, 23 passing and a total offense mark of 183 yards.
