Fired-U LocalsMay Surprise The injury riddled Gamecocks, with all odds stacked against them, will go all out tomorrow night in Carolina Stadium, hoping to give the football world the first big upset' of the year, when they clash with one of the nation's top teams, Duke's powerful Blue Devils. Game time is set for 8 p.m. Coach Warren Giese and aides will be keeping their fingers crossed hoping to keep an early collegiate record clean although the nation's experts give a big, fat, emphatic no! The Gamecocks were hard pressed last Saturday to win the seasor'a opener with an un derrated Wofford eleven, 26-13. Birds Can Win Every man available, every ef fort will have to be utilized to cope with the visitors from the Tar Heel state but as Alex Hawkins and Frank Destino put it recently, "if the entire team wants to win as bad as we do, it can be done." They went on to say that they (Duke) can put only 11 men on the field at one time and the Gamecocks can put the same number and they can be just as good if that all-out effort is given. Of course, our home team will not be at full strength. Minor injuries and some most serious will naturally hurt our chances. One of the most encouraging sights at practice this week was the return of quarterback Sam Vickers. This position was consid erably weak in the Wofford game with Mackie Prickett and Jack Hall the only two seasoned men available. Vickers will aid the situation grd?tly if he is in con dition to go tomorrow night. Kompara on Way On the encouraging side of the picture was the work of sophomore tackle John Kompara. It looks as if he may be coming into his own and will undoubtedly he counted on considerably in future games. I)orsett Surprises As was expected, our soph half backs Alex Hawkins and King )ixon came through in fine fashion. Hawkins had a total of I;4 yards rushing an(i passing, in cluding a six-yard thrust for a touchdiown and passing for one, he p)lay covering 21 .yardls. Our right halfback also contributed two( points after touchdownis. D)ixon looked sharp amassing a total of 8i; yardls rushing. One ot the unexpected high lights of the game last week was the running of speedster Johnny D)orsett wvho has been kept in the shadows of D)ixon andl Hawkins thus far. Dorsett surp)risedi with a very credlitable 54 yardls in 12 ries for a 4.5 average. D)uke Boasts Stars The D)uke gaine will be a big hunrtle for the Gamecocks. Regard less of wvhet her we win, it will be a big boost for the team, the Zuniversity, and the state if the visitors are given a sc'are andl I believe we can expect just that. But you may rest assuredi that mten like Sonny Jlurgensen, Buddy Bass, and Roy Horde don't scare easily. N ot to mention such sea soned veterans as Hal McElhaney and C'harlie Klinger wvho wvill be tough men to copeW with. Although Jurgensen is rated one of the top quarterbacks in the country, many fans will await the chance to see his number one undlerstudly, Bob Brodhead in a(ction. Many D)uke supporters rate this fabulous sop)h on par wvith .Jurgensen. In all, it will be an interesting evening in ('arolina Stadium. The visitors will be a colorful aggrega tion to watc'h andl in tho Game cocks you may not see the likes of D)uke at the present but you will be gazing at a team of the fuatuore. I may add that It will not be too far in the distant futuore either. Head Coach Warren Giese has stated that he will definitely he present at this time to speak to the "Duke hungry" students and spectators. According to our coach, he will bring with him some of our outstanding players and introduce them to the crowd. One of the highlights of the evening will be a "key' note" talk by one of the most colorful and ardent Carolina boosters in the entire state. You have never heard anything like this gentleman and it will be well worth your time to be present at this time. His name will be withheld at press time at his own request but you will probably never forget it after he speaks tonight.
