WHAT'S COOKING?! Tonight's the night! South. Carolina's Gamecocks will be unveiled in Carolina Stadium at 8 p.m. against Wofford's Terriers before approximately 25,000 curious spectators, in cluding a bulging student section of nearly 4,700 students.1 I use the word curious as that is exactly the situation. Coach Giese and his staff have held such secretive workouts in preparation for Wofford that very little word has leaked out as to what to expect. In fact, the word I have received is that all practices in the future will be held behind locked doors. In regards to this, I will only say that all respect and faith is (lue Coach Giese and his tactics. He is a coach with' the knowhow and the means and if this is what it takes to put us a representative team on the field, then let it be. NEW OFFENSE INSTALLED We do know that the Gamecocks will field a rehitively new team according to the type offense they will use. They will use the drive series to a great extent with few variations. This will lead to more power football rather than the spec tator type offense. But you may rest assured that with such runners as Frank Destino, King Dixon, Alex Hawkins, Johnny Dorsett, and others. you will be treated with the wide open type game at times. INJURIES HURT The Birds were dealt a serious blow recently when Carroll McClain, fleet halfback who was one of the leading runners last year suffered a painful knee injury which required surgery. At last report, McClain will be lost for the season. This will hurt our offense considerably but it is my opinion that soplh star Alex Hawkins will fill the gap vacated by 'McClain capably. Also on the ailing list is the highly touted Bob Barrett and Johnny Stallings. Both will probably miss the opener with Wofford but should be back in full stride . for next Saturday's toughie with the power laden Duke Blue Devils. Dan South has been doing a tremendous job as Barrett's replacement at fullback and according to reports received along the "mysterious grapevine," he will be a hard man to push out if he continues at his present pace. NEW FACES Two other sophomores will make their debut in the start ing lineup for Coach Giese's forces. They are the much heralded King Dixon of Laurens and versatile Alex Hawkins, coming to the University from South Charleston, West Vir ginia. Called by Coach Giese two of the most competitive players he has ever coached, both Hawkins and Dixon are gifted with quick reflexes and smart heads for football. Back ing up these two and just a step behind are two more fine halfbacks. These are Johnny Dorsett and Frank Destino. Both these men are due for years of stardom for the Gamecocks if past practice sessions are any indication. Rounding out the starting backfield, barring changes at the last minute, will be the veteran Mackie Prickett. Although I have not seen him in p)ractice, by talking to our capable quarterback, one would get the impression that he means business this season and will give a fine display of himself at his position this year. We know he is a good runner and smart signal caller and believe '56 will be his best year. LINE COULD BE STRONG Up front we shouldn't have too much trouble, barring injuries to key men. At the ends, Carolina could have the two top ends in this section starting at this position. Buddy Frick is called by ('oach Giese the best end he has ever coached. At the other flank will be Julius Derrick, who has two gr'eat hands and speed to go with them if he plays the type ball he is capable of p)laying. At tackle, Sam Delucca could have a great year and receive p)ost season honors if the season's r'ecordl is good enough to warrant recognition. Tony Byers is looking his best from all reports and should do a top-flight job at the other tackle. Rounding out the line will probably be Rick Ericcson and Nelson Weston. Service re *turnee "Corky" Gaines andl Bill Floyd have been looking sharp and could step up at any time. At center, soph Lawton Rogers and Char'lie Johnson, a junior, have been battling it out with mammouth Tony Gialenous challenging. On past practices I would say it may be Rogers starting tonight. Depth should be fair 'this season. According to reports received, there is little to choose between the first two squads. The remaining contingents have little game expe rience but should come along fast to add the much needed reserve strength. Coach Conley Snidow has a very impressive 23-10 for the last three years at Wofford. Ile has been quoted as saying that he has 11 men on this year's squad vho could make anyone's team. Coach Snidow employs a flanker style split-T multiple formation which will be entirely new to some of the Gamecocks and this will be the only time this season Giese's men will run up against such an offense.
