Freshman baseball candidates
will be reporting soon and Hey
ward Tunstall, who will coach the
Biddies, has indicated that he ex
pects a fine turnout. Already a
number of promising men have ex
pressed a desire to try out for the
freshman squad and coach Tunstall
said that with all the interest
shown thus far that he expects to
field one of the strongest freshman
baseball teams in many a year.
Heading the list of young talent
will be a crop of the state's best
high school pitchers of last year.
Jimmy Craig, rob,:st fireballer
from Greenwood, is in camp and is
already being counted on in the fu
ture for varsity competition. Craig
was a strike-out artist for Green
wood high school and Greenwood
Mills textile team where he aver
aged approximately 15, strike-outs
per game. He is a righthander,
has speed to burn and a good curve
ball. le has all the makings of a
good pitcher as he stands 6 feet I
inch and weighs 207 pounds.
Another young hurler that many
are tabbing for pitching success
with the Gamecocks is crafty Jim
Gay. Gay was quite a controversial
figure with the home folks of Tay
lors when he entered Carolina. His
brother, Buck, had been Furman's
leading pitcher for four years and
had hopes of brother Jimmy fol
lowing in his footsteps but yielded
to his younger brother's wishes
when he decided to become a
G;amerooster.
Jimmy wvas a hurler for Tay
lors high school where he set
quite a record for himself in prep
SUNC Coach May
Take Pro Job
Rumors have been steadily fly
ing around the University of
North Carolina. The newest one
has scared quite a few Carolina
rooters. It has Basketball Coach
Frank McGuire going back to
New York as the coach of the
professional New York Knicker
bockers.
At the present Coach McGuire
is in the first year of a three-year
Sntract, and it is doubtful that
.., will break it. The fact that
he has a talent-loaded squad this
year which shows even more
promise for next season is a domi
nant factor in the belief that
Coach McGuire will stay at UNC.
As rumors go, the main line of
thought is that1 McGuire is the
logical choice for the New York
post. A native born New Yorker,
who played college and pro basket
ball in that area and later coached
there, McGuire naturally has a
,deep feeling about the big city.
S erJoe L ap ch ick, former
-fRnickerbocher coach was fired by
owner Ned Irish, leading sports
writers tabbed the North Carolina
mentor as the man for the job.
Although it is highly possible
that McGuire may wind up in New
York within a few years, it is
believed he will at least stay at
UNC until the end of this present
three-year contract. Many Carolina
rooters and officials are hoping
the same thing.
ROSENBLUTHI HITS 1,000
Lennie Rosenbluth, North Caro
lina's great forward, scored his
1,000th point as a varsity player
when the Tar Heels defeated Wake
Forest. The junior sensation
scored 33 points in the contest to
raise his two season total to 1,028.

circles. His senior year was his
best when he averaged a blistering
1 strike-outs per game while
pitching every game for his school.
In one stretch of 40 innings pitched
in a period of ten days, Gay struck
out 100 men. After leaving high
school, Jim carried his talents to
Victor Mills textile team of the
Greenville Textile league and was
the team's leading pitcher with a
five-and-one record until a techni
cality ruled him ineligible. Gay is
a very smart operator on the hill
and has the game under complete
control when he is pitching. He has
good speed and a very tricky curve
ball and change-of-pace pitch.
Carroll Norrell is another good
pitcher and hails froin Ninety Six
of this state. He attended Ninety
Six high school where he stood out
as' a pitcher and also hurled for
the Ninety Six textile team. Richie
Hoffman is another outstanding
pitching candidate and comes from
Union City, New Jersey.
Probably the most outstanding
infielder wvill be the diminutive
Cleon Reece, flashy second base
man from Senior high school of
Greenville. Reece was a very good
glove man and was exceptional
wvith the stick as he hit in the tor
rid .500 circle. He wvas also one of
the outstanding ballplayers in the
Greenville Textile league.
In all, things are certainly look
ing up for our future Gamecock
baseball teams and it cannot come
too soon for this writer.

of t"h Wofford athletic program.
A new trampoline, one of the best

Coach Walker does not intend to
enter any competition with his
bouncers this year because of the
inexperience of the team. The
plans this year consist of organ
