Operating on the belief that
religion is a way of life and not
just another extra-curricular activ
ity, the YMCA and the YWCA
seek to serve the needs of the
"Men and Women of Carolina."
The "Y" is a part of a great world
wide organization begun in 1844
by George Williams, a young clerk
in a London dry-goods house, who
sought to improve the poor living
and social conditions prevalent
among the people at that time.
The University of Virginia is gen
erally credited with having the
first student YMCA in America in
1858. Today there are over 900
YMCA's, YWCA's, and Student
Christian Associations throughout
the land.
. The "Y" had its origin at the
University in 1883 when a fresh
man, John A. Rice, later president
of Columbia College, organized
five other freshmen into the first
real religious organization on the
campus. Under the guidance of
such directors as John A. Mills,
R. G. Bell, and Ted Ledeen, the
"Y" has never lapsed, but instead
has grown increasingly stronger
through the years.
The University "Y" has a unique
record of achievement. Some of
its accomplishments are as fol
lows: first freshman camp in the
nation, first freshman council in
the South, freshman orientation

faculty of the University to the
Senate of the United States today
there are men whose earlier col
legiate training in leadership posi
tions may be traced to their presi
dency of this "Y."
At present, as in the past, the
"Y'" affects virtually every citizen
of the Carolina community, some,
of course, more directly than
Wothers. The organizational 8truc
ture centers around the three
Councils--Freshman which meets
on Mondays, Sophomores which
meets on Thursdays, and Junior
Senior which meets on Fridays.
Each Council elects it1s own of
ficers and they in turn select the
chairmen of the various commit
tees, thus forming the Cabinets.
The Junior-Senior Cabinet is the
* governing body for the- overall
"Y." Each of the three Councils
Smeets weekly for a one o'clock
luncheon-meeting, at which time
varied and interesting programs
- are presented; for example, last
November the Rev. Lewellyn Wil
liams, congregational minister and
member of the British Parliament,
addressed over 100 students at a
weekly freshman meeting. The
Cabinets meet at least three times
monthly, and the members indi
vidually hold committee meetings
at their discretion.
The "Y" is practically the only
r' organization that functions during
summer school and publishes a
weekly newsletter then. The facil
ities of the R. (G. Bell Camp are
available year-round to all stu
dents, faculty, and administrative
members, and to every U.S.C. or
ganizations, upon reservation at
the "Y" office. Each summer the

activities at Carolina. Also every
incoming freshman and transfer
student is assigned a Big Brother
or a Big Sister.
Outstanding features of the
"Y" program are the annual
three-day freshman orientation
camps for both boys and girls.
During the guidance and testing
week in September of each year
the "Y" sponsors a freshman
mixer which is consistently at
tended by over 1,000 students.
Periodically throughout the year
"Y" socials are held both in Rus
sell House and at the R. G. Bell
Camp. During exam week every
semester the "Y" promotes coffee
hours.
The "Y" assumes a significant
role in the planning, pteparation,
execution, and follow-up of Reli
gious Emphasis Week. The "Y"
director, Ted Ledeen, is available
for counseling at all times. The
YWCA sponsors a candlelight
worship service every Sunday
night at 11 p.m. in the girls'
dormitories.
In addition to the above there
are such other committees and
commissions as membership, public
relations, music, campus affairs,
and world relatedness. Delegations
are sent to the state conference
each semester at Camp Long near
Aiken; to the regional conference
each June at Blue Ridge, N. C.,
andi to the national conferences
and assemblies held each year
during December. At the present
time one Carolina student is serv
ing as vice-p)resident of the State
Student Christian Asgeation,
while another Is serving as re
porter for the Southern Area
YMCA Student Councll.

Two Women's associations on
campus recently held meetings.
They are the Women's Athletic
Association which organizes and
carries on the intramural sports
for girls, and Co-ed association
which strives to promote the in
terest of women students in Uni
versity projects.

and Black picture was taken and
