Since most boys have a certain
amount of trouble buying gifts for
girls, especially during Christmas
season, here are a few suggestions
to help them with their shopping.
First try to get an idea of what
the girl wants. If you know what
she likes, you will find your prob
lem much lighter. If you plan to
buy clothes make sure you know
what size she wears.
If you don't want to worry
about sizes and such; you can al
ways buy perfume. There are very
few girls who would not like to
have a new bottle of perfume or a
cosmetic set.
A cashmere sweater or sweater
set will always please a girl.
.Jewelry is a very good gift also,
especially if it is engraved.
Music boxes, jeweled swveaters,
jewelry boxes are unusual and
pleasing gifts.
Gifts for boys are nearly limit
____ less. There are numerous neces
sities, as well as luxuries, that
can be given.
Clothes are always needied. Socks
and ties are thought to be un
appreciated, but these items,
selected wvith a little thought into
the boy's personality, are always
welcomied. Select one of the con
servative ties, or a pair of the
not -so-glaring argyles. Sweaters
are' alwvays needed, and ap)pre
ciated, if they are of colors that
wvill look wvell op the wearer. If
you (14 not know wvhat colors to
select, inquire of the receiver.
* Shirts are a dlefinite necessity,
and1 the varieties to choose from
are many. In (dress shirts, notice
the collar style that is worn, and
give a style that is the same, or
similar. Many boys wear certain
collar styles and (do not like a
change. Also, if you are giving
a pastel-colored1 shirt, notice the
color of his suit, and select a color
that looks well with it. Do not
select colors or collars indiscrim
inately, hut observe before buy
ing.
Sport shirts have many style
varieties and almost any kind Is
sure to please. If in doubt about
a selection, give something similar
to those that he already has, or
has expressed an interest in.
Vests are also making a come
back, as they (do in the spring and
fall seasons. Select something to
contrast with his favorite sports
jacket for casual wear.
Jewvelry is a welcome item.

for themselves. Select something
new and different, such as the
wood links or the double links that
are appearing. New stud sets for
evening wear is a novel idea. This
can be combined with a new bow
and cummerbund.
A nice stud box is a different
idea. A place to keep these cuff
links and collar stays is needed
by most boys. A new watch band
can fulfill that gift need. New,
stimulated leather expansion bands
are now on the market and are
inexpensive. That man might also
be interested in a key chain, either
gold or silver.
A shoeshine kit or comb-and
brush set might be the t hing that
he needs. Perhaps he needls a
dopp kit for his shaving things.
They are available with zipper or
snap-to-tops, either unfitted or
with soap)- andl toothbrush-holders.
Give him a big bottle of shaving
lotion in a goodl brand. Or make
it a box of soap1 with a wvoody,
masculine smell.
There are always the standIard
gift items, such as Pen andI peneil
sets, cigarette lighters, travel
alarm clocks, p)ortable radios,
catmerais or luggage. Boys need
luggage as well as girls. Alter
this by giving a pair of binoculars,
if he is interested in hunting or
traveling.

The Block C Club held its an
nual fall dance at the Jefferson
Hotel Wednesday night. Music was
furnished by Dean Hudson and his
band. It was a campus wide affair
which lasted from 8 til 12.
The Block C Club is open to let
termen in the three major sports,
baseball, basketball, and football,
and to track lettermen. The mem
bers are voted in and have to un
dergo an initiation.
The officers of the Block C are:
Carl Brazell, president; Don Whet
stone, vice-president ;Frank El
lerbe, secretary; Fred Roberts,
treasurer; and Larry Gosnell, his
torian.
Design Of Maxcy
Brotherhood Pin
Is Announced
Maxcy Brotherhood has selected
a pin for its members, Ernie Lane,
president of Maxcy Brotherhood,
has announced.
The design for the pin is black
shielded with p white gold border,
gold lettering of entwined "M" and
"B." A triangle has the symbols of
liberty, equality and fraternity in
its upper left corner; a hand clasp
of friendship in the upper right
hand corner, and a small clear
stone at the bottom.

Maxcy and McBride Brother
hoods are having their annual
e 1 o s e d, Independent Christmas
dance tomorrow night. The dance is
being held at Club 21 on north
Main street.
The informal dance will be en
tertained by the Roy Haymond or
chestra, a local group, from 8 until
1 a. m. Dancing will be cabaret
style.
Maxcy President Ernie Lane
will present Mrs. Clyde Winn of
Rock Hill, Maxcy sponsor for the
r;arniet and Black, with a Christ
rnas present at the dance.
Ray May, McBryde president,
will present the Brotherhood's
'lponsor, A ubry Wilson, Columbia
college junior from Bishopville.

transcending all other physical ca
tastrophes in greatness.
According to "Astrophysics" by
Russell, Dugan and Stewart, the
immediate cause of such a cata
clysm appears to be a tremendous
development of energy, somewhere
beneath the star's surface, which
heats the steller gases to such a
degree that they expand violently
into space in all directions.
The release of the energy might
be precipitated by the collision of
the star with a small wandering
body with the result that an ex
tremely bright star suddenly ap
pears in the heavens.
Professor Martin refers to the
second chapter of the gospel ac
cording to St. Matthew:
"Where is He that is born King
of the Jews? for we have seen His
star in the East,, and are come to
worship him . . . Then Herod, when
he had privily called the wise men,
inquired of t hem diligently what
time the star appeared . . . When
they had heard the king, they de
parted; and, lo, the star, which
they saw in the East, went before
them, till it caie and stood over
where the young child was."
The three wise men who came
from Persia or thereabouts to con
sult with Herod are believed to
have been well informed as to the
position of bright planets and
bright stars in the heavens.
Their knowledge of celestial
bodies was probably sufficient to
enable theni to identify easily the
planets Venus, Jupiter, and Saturn
and the very bright star Sirius.
But regarding these references to
the Bible it appears that they were
confounded by the sudden appear
ance of a very bright star in the
East, an d were unable to identify
it.
It is not likely that this star
could have been mistaken for a
comet, for a comet usually has a

Nor is it likely that it could have
been a fire ball ,as a fire ball re
mains in the sky for only a few
seconds.
In November, 1572, an extremely
bright star suddenly appeared in
the constellation Cassiopeia and
became as bright as the planet
Venus for many months and then
gradually grew fainter until 16
months later it was invisible to the
naked eye.
This was a supernova and there
are many other examples of the
sudden appearance of bright stars
in the heavens.
So the Christmas star is believed
to be a supernova which suddenly
appeared in the southeast. The fur
ther reference in the Bible is that
when the wise men left Herod t.ney
saw that the star went before them
until it stood over the young Child's
birthplace.
It is natural that due to the ro
tation of the earth this star ap
peared to move westward, accord
ing to Prof. Martin. When the wise
men saw it after their conference
with Herod it is believed that it
was in the direction of south and
about on the meridian of their
position.
As it is estimatd that Bethle
hem was about due south of their
position, this would place the star
over Bethlehem and their traveling
toward it would bring them to
where the child was.
Texas School Spirit
The Alpha Chi Omegas at the
University of Texas really take
their school spirit in a big way.
Not only (lid the sorority burn red
candles in support of their favorite
team, but they also set their li
brary on fire.
Some say it was an accident,
but The D)aily Texan said, "We
like to think it was simply over
exuberance of school loyalty. They
should receive a reward for their
efforts . . . possibly a gold-plated
fire extinguisher.
