One of the main cogs in the hard
wood attack of the Carolina Game
cocks this year promises to be a six
foot, four-inch gentleman from the
Blue Grass state. The man in qui
tion is Grady Wallace, a junior
transfer from Pikeville Junior
College located in Pikeville, Ken
tucky.
Last year, the young Wallace set
the hardwoods on fire with a
sizzling 32-point per game average
over Pikeville's- 33-game regular
season.
The p!ay of Wallace and Bobby
McCoy, also now at South Caro
lina, was invaluable to Pikeville as
the Kdntucky squad compiled a
28-5 season, winning the state
championship for Coach Walter
Hambrick. Hambrick also has been
transplanted to USC, serving as
assistant basketball coach to Coach
Frank Johnson. With the addition
of these three Pikeville men, Caro
lina's ailing basketball forces hope
to experience a resurgence.
Wallace began his basketball
career in the seventh grade of
Betsy Lane High School in his
home town of Mare Creek, Ken
tucky. For four years he held down
the pivot post and his senior year
was elected team captain. Betsy
Lane won the county tournament
during Wallace's junior year under
the captainship of Benny Fannin,
now at South Carolina.
The Kentuckian is majoring in
physical education here and states
that he "really likes Carolina."
Grady especially comments on the
friendliness shown by the student
body. Regarding this year's bas
ketball team, Wallace comments:
"The team's looking good in prac
tice, the hustle is really improving.
I think we're in for a good year."
Here's hoping that Grady's words
will be prophetic for Coach John
son's basketballers. There's one
thing for certain, however, the
Pikeville contingent could be a
powerful factor in the "revamping"
of the South Carolina basketball
machine.
Intramural
Roundup
Intramural athletics continued at
a fast pace these past two weeks
as badminton and golf reached ex
citing climaxes and the much
awaited football season and table
tennis will begin shortly.
Badminton
~,Badminton, which is a newcomer
to intramural sports this year,
proved quite a success as all fra
ternities entered teams and created
a spirited sensation as thrillers
were featured in practically each
set.
Bob Royall, veteran intramural
star, showed too much form and
finesse as he completed all league
play undefeated. Royall tripped
Dick Nodden of SPE fraternity in
lopsided contests, 15-1 and 15-2 to
gain the finals. Buzzy Carmichael,
also of SAE, had to fight for his
life in the semi-finals with W. C.
,Cook of Phi Kappa Sigma, as the
two men staged hair-raisers in each
game. The scores were 15-8, 14-16,
and 12-15. In the finals It was all
Royall again as the seasoned per
former brushed Carmichael aside'
in straight games of 15-3 and 15-7.
Golf
The golf championship was won
by Sigma Chi fraternity as they
edged a hot Phi Sigma kappa team
~in close matches. SAE, who owned
the golf crown from last year, was
upended in the semi-finals by Phi
~Sigma Kappa.
Football
Intramural football, always a
hotly contested sport on the cam
pus, is slated to begin on Wednes
day, November 30. SAE is the de
fending champion. Table tennis
will be reeled off during the week
of December 5. PhI Sigma Kappa
held the table tennis title last year.

CASKEY SAVES GAME ... Mike
Caskey tackles the Virginia full,
back, Jim Bakhtiar, on the thirty
yard line. At the time Carolina had
a 21-14 lead. If Caskey had missed,
Bakhtiar would have been in the
open and the game would have
gone into a tie. The score remained
the same, giving Carolina its third
victory of the year against six
losses. This was Caskey's last game
with the Gamecocks. (Photo by

South Carolina's Gamecocks get
their 1955-56 basketball season
under way this week end with two
non-conference games - one last
night versus The Citadel, and one
scheduled for tomorrow night with
Wofford in the University Field
House. Game time is eight p. m.,
and the freshman squad will meet
the Wofford freshmen in a pre
liminary at six p. m.
Head Coach Frank Johnson will
send out a probable starting lineup
of Grady Wallace and Art Smejkal,
forwards, Lee Collins in the pivot,
and Benny Fannin and Bob McCoy
at guard positions-a height aver
age of six feet, two inches. Collins
is tall man at six feet, six inches.
Sol Richardson, a guard, and
Marshall Perkins, a sophomore for
ward, have shown well in practice
sessions and will be two of the
stronger candidates for starting
positions.
Next week end, the Gamecocks
move to North Carolina in the role
of underdog, where they will be*
bucking two tough Atlantic Coast
Conference contenders, Duke in
Durham on December 9, and UNC
at Chapel Hill the following night.
Carolina then meets the NC State
Wolfpack in Charlotte on Decem
