Biddies Have
Best Team
Since 1950
By DON BARTON
USC Sports Publicist
In view of the University's fine
1955 freshman football team, sev
eral persons have snarled publicly
and privately, "Oh, they always
come up with a fine freshman
team, but they never do nuthin'
when they get to the varsity."
In the interest of enlightenment,
a look at South Carolina freshman
teams of the past few years shows
the following:
In 1950 the "Biddies" were a
strong outfit, although they did
lose one game, to Miami, 40-7.
However, durir_ the varsity years
of that group Carolina won 17 and
lost 11 games, over par for the
historical record, and when they
were seniors compiled a 7-3-0
record.
In 1951 and 1952 freshmen were
eligible to play on the varsities in
the Southern Conference, so there
was no first-year team at Caro
lina.
In 1953 the USC frosh were
Shumiliated by Clemson, 39-7, lost
by several touchdowns to North
Carolina and were generally not
considered a powerhouse.
In 1954 j[he Biddies managed to
squeak by Clemson, 14-13, but
were smothered by North Carolina
State, 34-20, and were beaten by
North Carolina, 24-12. They did
add Wake Forest and Georgia
Military College to the list of vic
tories, but the record was not con
sidered outstanding.
The 1955 Biddies started off by
swamping Wake Forest, 25-7, and
then donned North Carolina, 18-0.
~In their latest game they were
Sheld to a 14-14 tie by one of the
best Clemson freshman teams in
history, although the Biddies out
gained Clemson, 380 yards to 253.
-There are several fine varsity
prospects on the squad, including
the sensational halfback King
Dixon, fullback .Charles Jackson,
center Lawton Rogers, tackle John

season has been an encouraging

junior, Mackie Prickett of St.
Matthews, rank 1-2 in the South
Carolina total offense figures.
