Gamecoc1 By Lewis Cromer Gamecock Sports Writer The Sith Carolina Gamecocks 'pened the 1965 football season Saturday night with a 26-7 victory over a game but out manned Wofford College eleven. The crowd, estimated at 15,000, saw the Birds score twice in the first canto and add two more tal lies iri the third and fourth quar ters as they used straight running and passing game to attain their initial victory. With assorted scouts from future Gamecock op sition in the stands, Enright used no "tricky stuff" in the con test. The main cogs In the Carolina attack were the Gamecocks' two stellar halfbacks, Mike Caskey #nd Carl Brazell. Caskey scored twice in the contest, his first touchdown coming on a 44-yard burst off tackle and his second on a line plunge from two yards out. Brazell, who accounted for 104 yards in four rushes for the Birds, scored the initial touchdown on the second Carolina play from GAMECOCKS GAIN ... State 6 Star Of The Week *We are back at the old "Remning ton" again this semester giving our choices for the "Star of The Week." First of all let me extend a word of welcome to our new yeaders. Namely, the Freshmen and any other students who have turned in tellectual over the summer and de cided to read The Gamecock. Our Star this week comes from the Carolina football team. In Carolina's decisive but anim pressIve 26-7 defeat of Wofford Saturday night, two men stood out in offensive ability. They were. Carl Brazell and Mike Caskey. On the second play from scrimn mage, Brazell, the flashy little senior and co-captain from Co lumbia, scooted for 87 yards and a touchdown. Brazell, who ran only five times, accounted for 104 of Carolina's 857 yards rushing. The other Carolina standout was Mike Caskey, the Gamecocks' other freewheeling halfback from Ben nettsville. Caskey ran 44 yards for the sec ond Carolina TD. This one came on the sixth Carolina play of the evening. Caskey scored again from two yards out In the third period after Carolina had moved the ball 42 yards. Caskey averaged six yards per try in 14 carries. Another member of the Game :s Defeat scrimmage as he electrified the crowd with an 87-yard scoring sprint on a pitchout from quarte back Jack Hall. The Terriers' lone tally came in the third period on a sustained drive of 62 yards with George Lawrence, a senior from Brooklyn, New York, going the last two yards on a line plunge. Halfback Frank DePrete and quarterb;ik Charlie Jones led the Wofford forces in a losing cause. Bunch Looks Good Bobby Bunch, a sophomore from Summerville, showed promise of great things to come as he quar terbacked the Gamecocks with finesse and splendid field general ship. Bunch and Jack Hall shared the quarterbacking duties for Carolina due to an injury suffered by Mackie -Prickett, first string quarterback, who watched the con test from the sidelines. The Terriers won the toss and elected to receive. Lawrence re turned 17 to the Wofford 27. Four rushing plays earned a Wofford first down and a Reed to Burns rer skirts end and picks up yardage offord Terriers. Bobby Bunch and e background and an unidentified rarrer. eets Wake torrow Winston-Salem will be host to ful and unpredictable football meet the Wake Forest Demon Deacons tomorrow night. P The last time South Carolina and Wake Forest met in Winston Salem, 1952, the Deacons exploded for a 39-14 victory, but close games have been more the rule in the series. For instance, last year USC squeezed out a 20-19 win in Columbia, following the Deacons' 19-18 upset victory at Charlotte, the year before. Several of the South's brightest performers will be in action in the game. Mackle Prickett, who led the conference in passing and total of fense last fall, will probably quar terback the Gamecocks. He has a broken finger on his left hand which may cause him to see limited action. The Deacons will be directed by Nick Consoles who was a close sec ond to Prickett In total offense. Jack Hall will quarterback the Gamecocks along with Prickett. Carolina has two fine breakaway runners in Mike Caskey and Carl Brasell and an outstanding center, Hugh Bell. Bob Bartholomew, Wake For est's pre - season All - American tackle, will anchor the lins. Bill Barnes leads the returning Wake Forest runners, and end Jack Lad ner furnishes a capable target for the passes of Consoles. If the Gameeocks can get by the Deacons, they will almost be as sured of a winning seaon and may be considered a mild threat for the Atlantic Coast Conference title, although there are some big games ahead. Wake Forest leads the Game cocks in the overall serIes, 14-11, with two ties, but the Gamecock. expect to close the margin on the Deacons tomorrow night. cock 11 who deserves mention is Bob Bunch, a sophomore from Summerville. Although Bunch did not start at quarterback, he handled the ball well and ran effectively to out shine the starter, Hall. The team looked slow and un-i sure to this observer but I am hoping with a little more practice, they will sharpen up and be ready 'for Wakane ethi. Satur,ay. Terriers aerial clicked for another at the Careiaa .48. The Birds 'dug in at that point, however, and Brazell took a fair catch at the Carolina 10-yard line where the Gamecocks went on the offensive for the first time in 1965. Caskey made three on a quick opener and Brazell, running beau tifully to his left, picked his way through the Terrier secondary and outran the Wofford safety man for the first score of the contest. Hall's point after touchdown attempt was wide and the Birds led 6-0 with 9:10 left in the first period. Birds Score Again Lawrence returned the ensuing kickoff three yards to the Wofford 10. DePrete gained eight yards in two running plays and a penalty gave Wofford a first down. Buddy Frick halted the threat, however, as he intercepted a Jones pass, putting USC again in a threaten ing position at the Terrier 39-yard line. . Caskey and Brazell made a first down in three plays but a clipping penalty. against South Carolina pushed the Birds back to the 44. On the next play, Mike Caskey went all the way on an off tackle thrust to put Carolina in front by a 12-0 count with 5:55 left in the first quarter. Brazell's placement was no good. - Wofford failed to make any headway after- the next kickoff and kicked out of bounds at the Carolina 25. The Gamecocks, with Bunch mixing his plays nicely, moved to the Wofford 22 as the first quarter ended. Caskey romped to the 10 and the Gamecocks were once more threatening., The Ter riers bristled, though, and a fourth down toss from Hall to Brazell was short of the necessary yard age at the Wofford five-yard line. Wofford could not gain in the next series of downs and punted out on the Carolina 45. Hall fumbled and the Terriers received a break when Gobolos recovered on tlhe Carolina 34. Still the Terriers could generate no steam against the defensive-minded Birds and kicked over the goal on :ourth down. The Gamecocks marched to the Wofford 44, where McGinnis pounced on Hall's fumble to halt .the drive. Jones passed to Bur dette at the Carolina 44 for a first down, but the drive stalled and the Gamecocks took over on their own 43. Here another USC drive began. Bunch gained 11 and Tar rer gained eleven more through center. Hall replaced Bunch and made a first down at the Wofford 12. Time ran out after two in complete passes and halftime in termission found the Gamecocks leading the Terriers 1.2-0. Half Activity The W'offord College band per formed at halftime and the Wof ford cheerleaders, nattily attired in bermuda walking shorts, jour neyed across the field to give a cheer for the Carolina student body. USC received the second half kickoff and an exchange of punts put the Gamecocks on the Wof ford 42. Hall hit Derrick twice and Carolina had a first down at the Wofford eleven. Jarrett plowed for seven. Caskey and Jarrett got one yard each and then Caskey banged over for the third Carolina touchdown. Derrick made the first placement of the 1955 season and it was 19-0 with 7:50 of the third quarter left. After the next kickoff, the Ter riers came to life and initiated a sustained drive. Lawrence and De Prete reeled off sizeable chunks of yardage and the Terriers threat ened at the Carolina 14. Cleveland passed to Burdette at the Game cock two and Lawrence went in standing up on the next play to put Wofford into the scoring column. End Weyland Burns booted the extra point and the lead was whittled to 19-7 with les than three minutes left in the quarter. .Jarrett Seores Carolina then sprang into ae tion. Tarrer nailed a Bunch pass at the Gamecock 29. McCln and Bunch carried for another first down to the Wofford 45 as the third quarter ended. Braiel, Bunch and Caskey carried to the two in six plays and Bunch sneaked for a first and tens on fourth down. Jarrett punched over for the final tall, and his extra point boot was perfect as the Gamecocks sported a 28-7 lead. The Terriers moved briefly to the CarolIna 40 but there they lost the halt on downs. Carolina could not move through the airways and the Terriers again had an oppor tunity to score. A Carolina inter ception ended the threat and the game as the final whistle sounded. The Gamecocks had won their opener, as most had expected, but must look forward to one of the toughest schedules ever faced by a Garnet and Black team.
