It is getting on toward summer time, the time for re
laxation and scrounging around the beach.
The spring sports are in full swing. I will take a look
in the record book and give you a rundown of the spring
sports records of all the teams in the conference for last
year. -
If you are not interested, stop here. If you are interested,
then let's go.
Clemson-Duke
Alphabetically, though not athletically, Clemson comes
first.
They had a winning season in only one sport, baseball.
Their record was 14 wins and 10 losses. Their wins included
two over South Carolina. We have two games schedule'd
with them this year, April 30, there, and May 11, here.
In golf the Tigers won six, lost seven and in tennis they
had a four won, eight lost record. They split two in golf
with South Carolina and split two with us in tennis.
In track they won one and lost three, including an 88-43
loss to the Gamecocks.
Duke had a 10-13 record in baseball and, 8-1 in .golf,
losing only to North Carolina. In tennis it was almost even,
nine wins and eight losses.
In track the Blue Devils were not very active. They only
had four meets and split them, 2-2. They lost to South Caro
lina and Princeton, beat N. C. State and Camp Lejeune. Or
maybe it was this way-Shankle won two and Duke lost two.
Lacrosse, a strange name, is a spring sport in which
Duke engaged nine times. They won seven, lost one, tied one.
(South Carolina don't got no lacrosse team.)
Maryland-North Carolina
Maryland, with a total enrollment of 11,700 students,
won 15, lost nine, and had one tie. Burton Shipley, the coach,
is in his 32nd year of teaching the Terrapins how to play
baseball.
Maryland had a winning season in five spring sports. It
was 10-5 in tennis, a fair record.
In track they lost one to Navy and won their other four
meets, beating Quantico, West Virginia, North Carolina and
Georgetown.
The golf results were not as good. It was 8-6, with one
of the victories being over the Gamecocks.
Lacrosse, that funny name again, is another of their
sports in which they came out on top, with nine wins and
three losses.
The University of North Carolina has a total enrollment
of 7,000. The Tar Heels won 14 and lost 11-in baseball. Their
coach has been around for a while, too. Bunn Hearn is in
his 26th season as coach.
Billy Ford of Charleston, S. C. is one of the golf stars for
the Tar Heels. With his help they won six and lost one, to
Duke.
Having the same coach for a long time doesn't seem to
cause any trouble. John Kenfield is in his 28th season as
tennis coach and his team had a 22-2 record last year.
And the track coach, Dale Ranson, has only been there
for three years. His team won three, lost three.
N. C. State--Virginia--Wake Forest
The N. C. State Wolfpack had a better than .500 season
in only one sport, and then just barely. Their record was 8-7
in baseball.
Their other records are 3-4 in golf, 4-11 in tennis, and
1-3 in track.
Their four victories in tennis are over Wake Forest, East
ern Carolina, twice, and William and Mary.
The Wolfpack defeated mighty Davidson by a wide mar
gin, 69 to 65% for their only victory.
Virginia has 3,203 undergraduate men and only 294 un
dergraduate women, poor guys. In spite of this they had a
winning season in three of five spring sports. Baseball was
seven wins, 13 losses, one tie.
In golf they won seven, lost three. In tennis, eight wins,
five losses. Lacrosse was 6-4, and track was 2-4.
Wake Forest has only 1,670 students. They won 13, lost
nine in baseball, 13-4 in golf, and 7-7 in tennis.
Wake Forest did not have a track team last year.
South Carolina
South Carolina has a total enrollment of 4,000. There are
2,500 undergraduate men and 1,000 undergraduate women.

able in our fair metropolis.
But let us get to the outdoor sports and let the indoor
sports rest for a while.
In three of the four sports commonly played durin~g the
spring term, we had a winning average, or very nearly sc
anyhow.
In the national pastime, baseball, we had a split season
with 10 triumphs and 10 sad defeats. The Gamecocks suf
fered double losses to North Carolina and Clemson and had
a double win over Virginia. The Birds split two games with
Duke, Wake Forest, N. C. State, Georgia, and Maryland.
The playboys, known to many as the golf team, won
eight and lost six last year.
Tennis is the only sport in which we did not have a .500
or better season. This team's record is seven victories and
eight defeats, and that is not too bad considering the support
they get.
Track is the one in which we shine. The cindermnen ran
and jumped themselves to six wins while losing only one to
North Carolina.
I doubt if anybody has gotten this far, but if you have,
I think you know about how the Gamecocks stand so far as
the rest of the conference goes. Not so good as they should.

Beats Clemson
South Car olina took four of six
singles matches and two of three
doubles matches to easily defeat
Clemson in tennis Tuesday after
noon.
The victory gives the Game
cocks a 6-5 ACC record and an
overall record of four wins and
six losses.
Last week Maryland beat the
Birds 8-1. The Terps swept all
but one of the six singles matches
and all three doubles matches.
Cariolina also won one, defeat
ing NC State easily 6-2. South
Carolina took all but two singles
events. It was State's fifth loss
against one win.

Carolina's Gamecocks caught
Wake krest's conference-leading
Demon Deacons on an off-day and
knocked them down to second
place with a 7-2 victory last Sat
rday.
The victory gave the Gamecocks
a two-day split over the weekend.
They 'et 6-3 to N. C. Stae's
Wolfpack FAiday in Raleigh.
Highlights of the weekend were
R. 0. 'Hughes' clutch pitching
against Wake Forest and a fine
display of hitting power by first
baseman Bob Crows.
Hughes, started his first game,
picked up his third win against
no losses. He was wild, walking
11 men, but bore down in the
clutches as the Deacs left 13 run
ners stranded. Hughes got super
lative backing, his mates making
no errors and the infield pulling
double plays three times to get
r him out of trouble.
Meanwhile, Wake Forest com
mitted eight rmscues. The Game
L cocks connected for five of their
six hits in the first two innings
and combined them with five of
the Wake errors and two bases
on-balls to score all their runs.
The Deacs also collected six hits.
Cross topped the hitting against
Wake Forest with two solid singles
and collected three for four against
State, including a powerful 890
foot home run over the left field
fence with two on to account for
i all three CaroLina runs. Cross

Jewell was also irwolved in all
three twin-killings against Wake

Bill Worham, who has been

games although he was held to one I
