JOHNSON RAG - By Wafter Johussess The spring sports are getting into full swing this week. Three of the four Gamecock teams that have opened so far began the season by winning. So we now have a winning streak of one game in two sports, the golf team having won one and tied one. If the combination of Lady Luck, FAte, and skill on the part of the athletes is a favorable one, these streaks will be much longer. Baseball, Track, and Golf are the three sports referred to. It is a good assumption that all three, regardless of how long a winning streak they have, will end up with a winning season. The tennis match with Wofford, which was originally scheduled for Monday, was rained out and had not been played when the paper went to press. Baseball and Track The baseball team opened the season Tuesday afternoon with a 12-1 win over Erskine. The Gamecocks were aided by Howard Tunstall's excellent pitching and Bill Wohrman's hitting. Wohrma:l banged out two doubles and a triple in four trips to the plate. Howard Tunstall pitched a four-hitter and struck out ten men, while walking only one. Howard and his twin brother, Heyward, are expected to be two of the top pitchers in the conference this year. The team will play a two-game series with Michigan State today and tomorrow. The track team was supposed to meet the P. C. Blue Hose Saturday, but they were rained out. However, they held the meet Monday and the Gamecocks won, of course. Tommy Woodlee defeated his big rival, Delane Johnson, in the 50-yard dash, but Johnson came back and took first in the 220, with Woodlee a close second. Woodlee also ran a lap on the winning one-mile relay. Due to a shortage of pole vaulters, he entered in this event and tied with two others for second place. The track team will enter the Florida relays at Gainesville tomorrow. Golf and Tennis The golf team opened its season Monday against Clemson. Ralph Irick rolled in a seven-foot putt on the last hole to gain a tie for the Birds. But they came out even better Tuesday. They were the victors over Furman by a 14 to 12 score. Bill Perry, of Furman, had low score with a 78. Billy Hig gins and Joe McCarley, two sophomores who will be very helpful to the team, both had a 79 for Carolina. McCarley, Higgins, and Bobby Gunnels, another sopho more, play the first three positions. They are followed by two returning lettermen, Bobby Boswell and Ralph Irick, as well as Bobby Howard. The tennis team was supposed to open Monday against Wofford in Spartanburg, but the match was rained out. It was re-scheduled for Wednesday and the results were not available when the paper went to press. In fact the match had not even been played yet. The Sports Page goes out on Tuesday night, you see. Anyhow, back to tennis. They have had and will have a busy week. Presbyterian was scheduled for Thursday after noon and today. Friday, the team will be host to Clemson. Tomorrow the Duke Blue Devils will be the guests. The tennis team will line up with John Speer at the top position, followed by Charlie Plowden, Knox Sherer, John Heinz, Er:nie Whitworth, and Levon Gantt or Bobby Ariail. Pro Baseball The Big League baseball teams are well into their dxhibi tion schedules. In the American League it looks to me like the Yankees will cop another pennant after missing it for one year. However, I don't count out the Cleveland Indians. In fact, there is a definite possibility that they will come out on top again. And I, for one, am hoping they will. If Ralph Kiner gets back into his old form again he will be a big help to them with his long ball. The Red Sox will have Ted Williams back but he is not enough to make them a contendler. The White Sox, one of my favorite teams, will probably be a first division club again, though I doubt if they will be at the top when the season ends. Jn the National League there are several possibilities. If the Giants find someone to fit in when they are needed again and if Willie Mays is in his usual form and if the pinch hitting comes through like it did last year, then they are an excellent bet to win the pennant for the second season in a row. If all this does not happen, then the Brooklyn Dodgers are the team. Milwaukee is a team that will certainly be in the first division and one that may be the top dog in the League. The other first division team will probably be either the Saint Louis Cardlina or the Cincinnati neds Golfers Win One, Tie One Ralph Irick of the University of South Carolina rolled in a seven oot putt on the last hole to give JSC a 13%-13% tie in a golf natchl at Clemson Alonday. This meet had or Saturday, but was postponed I still soggy Monday afternoon Coach Weems Baskin's cinder men, in their first outdoor meet of the season, scored well in all events. The Gamecocks captured eight first places and tied for an other and swept all places in the mile run and the javelin throw. The featured bout between Canecock dashman Tommy Wood lee and P.C.'s Delane Johnson ended in a draw with Woodlee taking the 100-yard dash and Johnson taking the 220-yard dash. Johnson moved out early in the 220 and outlasted a stretch bid by Woodlee. Woodlee was high scorer for the meet with 10 7/12 points, in cluding a leg of the mile relay and a tie for second in the pole vault. Joe Silas and Fred Roberts tied for second honors with two first places apiece. Silas took firsts in the discus and shot put, while Roberts took his firsts in the mile and 880-yard runs. High scorer for Presbyterian was Dale Hancock who took first places in both the high and low hurdles. The outstanding performance for the afternoon was Dick Bartul ski's 183-feet, 3%-inch javelin throw. This was less than a foot short of the state varsity record. Gamecocks Allen Inabinet and Johnny Reeves finished in order behind Roberts in the mile run and Gene Pcrry and Victor Wil nams trailed Bartulski in the javelin throw to sweep all places in these two events. Fred Roberts won the mile run in his first attempt at this distance event. His time of 4:51.3 was slow for the mile, but a wet track and no keen competition contributed to the slow time. Rob erts' time of 2:06.1 in the 880 yard run was not official due to a mix-up at the finish line. The tape was put up 15 yards beyond the finish line. Presbyterian was strongest in the hordles, in which they took 16 out of a possible 18 points. Dale Hancock and Bobby Falls lead the way for P. C. with Falls bearly edging Whetstone by inches to take second in the low hurdles. This win was South Carolinia's 15th in 17 meets over the past three years.
