Sitma Chi Has
25th Anniversary
The Gamma Nu Chapter of
Sigma Chi celebrated its twenty
fifth year of existence a week ago
last Monday with a Silver Anni
versary Banquet held at the Rain
how Room. Some 125 Sigs and
their dates were present, including
thirty alumni.
A turkey dinner started off the
evening with, the charter members
and the new pledges as the guests
of honor. The program was high
lighted with a speech by Constan
tine Sig Dr. Roy B. McKnight, a
former Grand Praetor of the
North-South Carolina Province
and a Life Loyal Sig. He spoke on
Sigma Chi and the American Col
lege Fraternity System. He urged
the alumni to form an alumni chap
ter in Columbia, pointing out some
of the advantages they and the
Active chapter could derive from
such an organization.
Mr. Mark Buyck, the chapter
adviser, started off the program
wiR an introduction of those
charter members who were able
Sto attend. This was followed by
some presentations which were
made to Bob Williams and James
Thomason by Jerry Bauknight.
Mike Lovejoy gave a short sketch
of the chapter history and Phil
Waters, rush chairman, spoke
briefly on the past rush season.
Lee Maupin led the entire group
in sonme Sigma Chi songs to top
off the wonderful night in Gamma
Nu history. President Bob Holmes
served as master of ceremonies.
Gg~ima Nu was given its char
ter on the night of November 9,
1929, at an installation ceremony
held at the Jefferson Hotel. The
initiation ceremonies were held the
night before with 31 men going
through the ritual. These same
31 names grace the charter which
hangs on the wall in the chapter
room in Tenement Six. The charter
was presented to the group by Dr.
William B. Ricks, a Past Grand
Consul, who represented the Gen
eral Fraternity. Accompanying
Dr. Ricks from General Head
quarters was Dr. Joseph C. Nate,
the only man ever to hold all four
Grand offices in the fraternity.
The group of thirty-one outstand
ing men on the campus first met
in 1927 to form into a petitioning
group and they called themselves
