BOBBY ALFORD
The football season is entering the final weeks of the year.
The different Bowls are anxiously awaiting the outcome of
the final games. In the Atlantic Coast Conference there is a
two-team struggle between Duke and Maryland. Maryland
has completed its conference season and Duke has two games
remaining.
Upset of the week in the South: South Carolina over Duke
by a 20-14 score.
SOUTH
Two tigers, Clemson and Auburn, meet at Auburn, Ala
bama this week end. Auburn now has caught fire and it will
be a rough day for Clemson. Auburn, 27-7.
Other games in the south: Miami (Fla.) over Alabama,
21-7; Tennessee over Kentucky, 20-14; Maryland over George
Washington, 34-6; North Carolina over Virginia, 20-14; West
Virginia over North Carolina State, 35-0; Wake Forest over
William and Mary, 14-13.
EAST
There is slim picking in the east this week as only old
rivals meet. Yale will down classy Harvard by a 20-13 score
and Princeton will upend Dartmouth 21-0.
WEST AND SOUTHWEST
The big game this week is between Baylor and Southern
Methodist. SMU upset Arkansas last week to throw mud on
the Razorbacks' chances of a Cotton Bowl bid. It will be
Baylor over SMU by a,21-20 score, and Arkansas will get
the bowl bid.
Arkansas will battle LSU at Shreveport, La. in another
good game. LSU has had a rough season thus far. Arkansas,
28-20.
Another headliner out West is Notre Dame and Iowa.
Iowa was beaten last week by Minnesota, so this week they
will be on the rebound. Notre Dame tied the game with Iowa
last year with seconds remaining, so look out Notre Dame.
Iowa, 14-7.
Oklahoma and Nebraska hook up in a game that will
decide the Big Seven championship and possibly an Orange
Bowl bid for Nebraska. Oklahoma will win, 21-14.
Other Western games: Colorado over Kansas State, 27-7.
Purdue over Indiana, 27-14; Michigan State over Marquette.
FAR WEST
UCLA and Southern California meet in a grudge battle.
UCLA cannot return to the Rose Bowl this year and Southern
Cal will represent the PCC. UCLA, 14-7.
Ohio State and Michigan in an important Big Ten game.
Ohio State, the number one team in the nation, should down
the Wolverines, 21-14.
Minnesota and Wisconsin meet in another Big Ten head
liner. Minnesota, winner over Iowa, should down Alan
Ameche and company, 20-14.
California and Stanford, old rivals, meet in a game of
little importance except to the schools. California 14, Stan
ford 0.
Biddies Tackle Strong
Wake Forest Today
The 1954 edition of the USC Freshman football squad will
try and make their wins one more than their losses in their
finale this afternoon against Wake Forest in Raleigh. The
team left by bus for the North Carolina capital last night.

season with a lose to the Baby in their first string line which is

PLAYERS OF
HARRY LOVELL
Publicity means nothing but
ability does and this is the plight
of this week's Lineman of the
Week, Harry Lovell. Harry is I
perhaps the most underrated ball
player on the Carolina squad but
he sure makes up for all that in
ability and know-how; ask Vir
ginia's ball club, they will tell
you!!!!!!
It was Co-Captain Lovell who
set up the first Gamecock score
when he tore through the Cavalier
forward wall to block a punt thus
giving the Roosters the ball deep
in Virginia territory. A few plays
later Fullback Bill Wohrman
crashed over the left side of the
line (where Lovell is a spearhead
on blocking) for the score.
It is the dream of every line
man to either block a punt or pick
up a fumble and run for a touch
down but, "I got my biggest kick
today out of the running game,"
were the words spoken by Harry
after the game...
Teammates Praise
He was backed up by one of his
teammates who stated, "We were
running well over the left side
today for three reasons--Mince
vich, Lovell, and Silas." Words of
praise by a teammate for an out
standing leader on the gridiron.
Coach Rex Enright pointed out
that the outstanding defensive
efforts were contributed by Lovell,
Mincevich, and Cunningham with
Lovell holding up the weaker side
of the line and plugging up many
holes on defense. Coach En
right's advisary for the afternoon,
Coach Ned McDonald, backed up
the praise by stating that Mince
vich and Lovell were two of the
best lineman that his team had
met throughout the season.
Harry is one of the team's co
captains and is a Senior this
year. He hails from Atlanta,
Georgia, where he received all
state recognition in 1950 while
playing at Smith High.
He broke into the Rooster lineup
as an offensive guard while only
a Preshman. He played the same
position in 1952 but was moved
to tackle last year with the insti
tution of the one platoon system.
He is one of the most respected
men on the squad.

THE WEEK
MIKE CASKEY
This week's Back of the Week
s a player who would have made
,his column nearly every week
ast season but due to Injuries
ie has not been "right" until last
3aturday's affair. This man is
ittle Mike Caskey who wears a
nask which has caused some to
refer to him as the "Masked
darvel" and this he was against
lirginia.
Before leaving Carolina Stadium
ast Saturday afternoon, "Cissey"
)icked up 103 yards on the
rround, caught a pass which
!overed 50 yards, and played an
)utstanding defensive game as a
ialfback.
Top Play of the Game
With less than two minutes to
go until the end of the game
4uarterback Mackie Prickett
spotted Caskey in the clear on the
rar sidelines and therefore threw
iim a screen pass. Mike took the
ball with four men getting set
1o tackaa him, reversed his field
after craftily "out foxigg" his
would-be tacklers at the point of
reception, and ran for 35 yards
and a touchdown. The ball
>riginated on the 50 and was the
most electrifying play of the
afternoon.
The little left halfback who is
the favorite of all his teammates
was seen carrying the brunt of
the attack to the Cavaliers
throughout the entire afternoon
with his shifty and powerful run
ning ability as well as his hard
tackling and "cagey" handling of
opposing pass .receivers.
Mike is a 5'-11" 177 pounder
from Bennettsville, S. C. where he
was a standout high school player.
ie made All-State in 1950 and
played in both the Shrine Bowl
and the North-South game that
year.

Two Great Passes
Two plays brought the entire
stadium to its feet with both
being pass plays. The first one
came in the third quarter when
Quarterback Harold Lewis slipped
back in his pocket and uncorked
one of the prettiest passes In
Carolina history which found
Tommy Woodlee about 60 yards
down the field. Woodlee was
tackled on the spot.
The second 'pass came late in
the fourth frame when the con
ference's leading passer, Prickett,
shot a short lob pass to Caskey
with the latter reversing his field
and high stepping it into the end
zone with only a minute and fifty
seconds left in the game. Silas'
conversion was good.

Slow First Half
The first period 'found both
teams rather evenly matched with
neither showing any real signs of
strength. Towards the end of the
first period the Gamecocks began
to roll .on an 87-yard drive which
saw Wohrman .bust through the
line for the score just 80 seconds
after play had been resumed in
the second quarter. Silas' try for
the extra point was good. After
a see-saw battle through the re
mainder of the second period the
half ended with Carolina out in
front, 7-0.
In the third 'frame Lovell
blocked a punt which gave the
Roosters the ball deep in the
Cavaliers' territory and a few
plays later found Brazell taking

Two in 90 Seconds
The last 90 seconds provided the
crowd with something to yell
about. After the Caskey touch
down came the kick-off and onod
first play from scrimmage the
Virginians passed but End Billy
Rivers was the receiver. He took
the ball on the Virginia 81 and
drove his way to the 11 before
finally being tackled. With fire

for the score. Silas missed his
