Campus Briefs Chemists To Attend Meet Four members of the universit3 chemistry department will attend the southeastern regional meeting of the American Chemical Society at Birmingham, Ala., Oct. 21-23, Dr. H. W. Davis, head of the chem istry department, has announced Drs. Peyton C. Teague, D. F. DeTar, 0. D. Bonner, and William R. Gilkerson represent the uni versity. * * * Faculty Club Takes Bus The university Faculty Club will provide round-trip bus serv ice to the Carolina-Clemson game for faculty members and their families. Price of the trip will be 55 cents per person. The bus will leave the Faculty Club located on the corner of Sumter and Green Streets at 12:45 on Big Thursday and will return there after the game. * * * UN Day Observance in observance of United Na tions Day, the social psychology class is planning a program for Tuesday night, October 26 at 7:30 p.m. in Barnwell College. * * * Air ROTC Inspection Colonel Herman E. Hurst and Lt. Colonel Donald K. Rogers from Headquarters Air Force ROTC, Montgomery, Ala., will conduct an informal inspection of the uni versity's Air Force ROTC training facilities and leadership laboratory next Tuesday. * * " Girls' Rush to Begin Girls' rush week activities will begin October 28 with the Pan Hellenic Coke Party in the Sims Lobby at 4:30 p.m. All girls who are going out for rush are re quired to attend the party. Those who wish to go out for rush, and have not registered, may do so at this time. * * * Play Dates Are Set The University Players have set November 1, 2, and 3 as the tentative dates for their next play, Moliere's "Doctor in Spite of Himself." Anyone interested in partici pating in any way, either on or off stage, should contact Gene Crotty, head of the dramatics department, or Jack Rast, presi dent of the Players. * * * Law School Tests Any person desiring to enter the university law school for the spring semester must take the Law School Admission Tests on November 13, Dean Samuel L. Prince of the Law School has announced. This test has been required since last June 12. In order to stand the test the applicant must have filled his application with the Educational Testing Service of Princeton 10 days prior to the date of the test. These tests apply to all applicants irrespective of their academic experience or the num ber or type of degrees which have been awarded. BSU Begins Drive For Mission Fund The Carolina BSU will begin its drive for the Summer Mission Fund on Monday, October 25. The goal for this year is $100. Each year the state BSU chooses representatives to visit is the United States and other coun tries. The plan this year is tc send one representative tc Jamaica, use one representative in South Carolina and use a team ol four for nine weeks on weekend retreats. The fund will support all of this. Each Baptist dormitory studeni will be visited personally to solicil funds for the mission. All towr students will be called and a stu dent will pick up their contribu. tions. Sliderule Classes Offered By ELS Epsilon Lambda Sigma, honor. ary engineering society, will holk the second in a series of sliderule instruction classes Tuesday, Oc tober 27, through Thursday, Oc tober 29. The classes will be held in Room 117 Hamilton College from 5:00 to 6:00 p.m. The classes are open to engi neers and any other students in terested in the project. E.L.S., which recognizes scholarship and leadership among the students in the School of Engineering has undertaken this project in order to prepare freshmen engineers for IF C Votes New Housi The Interfraternity Council voted 11-1 by a roll call vote, "To thank President Russell for his housing program and to accept same," at the regular IFC meeting Monday. The lone negative vote was cast by Pi Kappa Phi and the one fraternity, Phi Kappa Sigma, was absent from the meeting. President Russell said he "hopes to have all fraternities housed in proposed new units by S tember of next year, but this ould de pend upon speed of construction." The proposed new units would be in the shape of a quadrangle with movable partitions on the upper floors enabling expansion or con traction of room space in each fraternity's section, as needed by the individual fraternities. Site of the building is on the property acquired by the univer sity last year, adjacent to the Freshman Center and bordered by Devine, Sumter and Blossom Streets. The vote was taken after the group listened to IFC President Tommy Rowland read off the following answers of questions sent to President Russell by IFC last week. 1. Q. How much will each in dividual's room rent be per semester ? A. $50 per semester. 2. Q. How much will the chapter rooms cost per semester or year? A. This will be a matter of fair negotiation. We have thought about $300 per semester but this may be discussed. It is important to remember that these chapter rooms really consfst of the entire first floor and have four rooms and a large porch area. 3. Q. May girls come in the chapter rooms unchaperoned dur ing daylight hours? A. No. 4. Q. After agreeing to move into these dormitories, will frater nities be permitted to move into off campus houses when finan cially able? A. If the university deter mines upon a policy of housing on Catholic, Jewish Religious Week Leaders Named Rabbi Allan Tarshish of Con gregation Kahal Kadosh Beth Elohim in Charleston and Father McKevlin of St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Columbia, will be the Jewvish and Catholic leaders res pectively of Religious Emphasis Week. December 5-9 has been designated for the annual event Canon Bryan Creen, evangelist from Birminghart England, will be the Protestant leader of the wveek. He will be accompaniedl by his assistant Rev. Harold Frank ham and wvill conduct a city wide mission in Columbia at the same time. Other Protestant leaders for the event will be the Rev. Wallace Friday of Bethel Methodist Church, Spartanburg; the Rev. Henry Mobley, Presbyterian Church, Rock Hill, and 'Drx. Dotson Nelson, First Baptist Church, Greenville. "Faith to Live By" will be the general theme for the week. Annual 'Y' Drive To Start Oct. 27-30 The annual YM-YWCA Finance Campaign will be officially opened Oct. 27-30, under the leadership of Shirley Person -and Mark Buyck, treasurers of the univer sity "Y," with a goal of $2,600 being set for this year. The faculty and administration cam paign is expected to raise $1,100 and the remaining $1,500 will be the student goal. The soliciting of the drive will be (directed by Peggy Skelton and David Martin, co-chairmen of the campus - student soliciting, and Bertha Gardner and Dick Tuten, co-chairmen of the town-students. Each dormitory student will be contacted by a solicitor and each day-studen9 will be telephoned by a representative who will send a solicitor to the home of any stu dent desiring to make a contribu tion. Wednesday, Oct. 27 at 1:00 the kick-off luncheon will be held at Flinn Hall, at which time the solicitors will be given -instruc tions. Friday at 1:00 the solici tors will meet for a report of the nprores of the drive. To Accept ig Plan our promises the fraternities, it is unlikely that such policy would be changed in the near future. 5. Q. Will fraternities have any form of kitchen facilities? A. As now designed, no kitchen facilities are includqd. If such facilities can be worked In, the university would have no ob jection. 6. Q. How much, if any, furni ture would be supplied by the uni versity? A. All bedrooms will be fur nished. The chapter rooms must be furnished by the fraternities. 7. Q. Will adequate parking facilities be provided? A. There undoubtedly is more parking available than elsewhere about the university, but whether adequate may be debatable. 8. Q. How many fraternities will be adequately housed in these new units in September, 1955? A. We would hope to have all but this will depend upon the speed of construction. 9. Q. What will be the policy of the university toward having houses off campus next year ? A. That will depend upon the availability of housing on the campus and on policy determina tion of trustees. 10. Q. Whak will be the policy of the university toward the fraternities now living in off campus houses ? A. All will be treated alike. If the trustees determine that the fraternities are to be housed on university premises, all - will be required to comply. For this rea son the fraternities permitted to live off campus have been un equivocally advised that they are given permission solely for the school year of 1954-55. 11. Q. What will be the policy of the university toward fratern ities having house mothers in the units so that fraternities might have drop-ins and (ates in their houses? What would be the pos sibility of two adjoining fraterni ties sharing the expenses of one house mother? A.
