Whitmire, took first place honors
over five other contestants. She
was sponsored in the "Miss Colum
bia" contest by Sigma Chi.
The 1954 "Miss Columbia"
offers the following vital statis
tics: height 5' 7%"; weight 130;
bust 86; waist 24%; hips 85. She
is a pretty blonde with green eyes
and a medium complexion.
Miss Columbia will represent
Columbia in all beauty contests in
the state. These include the Water
melon Festival in Hampton, the
Cotton Festival in Aiken, the To
bacco Festival in Mullins, and the
Carolina Carillon Festival.
She will receive $150 worth of
clothes, and a three-day expenses
paid trip to Myrtle Beach for the
Myrtle Beach Beauty Pageant,
June 3, 4, and 5. Miss South Caro
lina will be ohosen at this time.

ing contest, state Beta Club offi
cer, state Presbyterian Youth offi.

radio station, celebrated the begin
ning of its eighth year of service
Saturday with open house from
1 p.m. to 5 p.m.
The schedule for the afternoon
included two quiz programs em
ceed by Mike Rast of WCOS and
WCOS-TV, and Mackie Quave of
WIS and WIS-TV. Digc jockey
shows by Allan Baker of WNOK,
Mike Rast, and Mackie Quave
were also featured. The contest
ants, all Carolina students, re
ceived prizes donated by Columbia
merchants.

"In the spring a young man's
fancy (and a young girl's, too, if
she's a Carolina co-ed) lightly
turns to thoughts of . . ." plans
for the summer vacation.
Of course the less fortunate will
keep their noses to the grindstone;
into this category fall the ambi
tious as well as the very much less
ambitious whose grades were some
thing less than Phi Beta Kappa
level. Let's not forget that little
something that every class needs,
the Romeo and Juliet who "just
couldn't say goodby."
While on the subject of Shakes
peare-some of our budding Thes
pians will be adding to their ex
perience and ability by playing
summer stock. Several have made
application to stock theaters, and
one has already been accepted by
the famous Barter Theater in
Abingdon, Virginia.
Many sororities and fraternities
have made plans for beach parties
as soon as the last final exam is
handed in. A fortunate few will
stay there all summer as life
guards or doing other work. Three
girls will spend their vacation a's
waitresses in a hotel in the Great
Smokies. They call this work!
