BASKETBALLERS READY TO REBOUND
AR ACQ b %tha1-1teams, attention! Beware of next
yeawa#Gamecock I
This is the impression this writer gets after talking with
USC cage coach Frank Johnson in the midst of spring basket
ball practice.
'his is no joke, either!
Dig this I The Gamecocks have five returning regulars,
two returning 1952-53 regulars who were out of school last
season, and four junior college standouts who are scheduled
to check in next fall.
The four junior college boys are all good outside shots,
says Coach Johnson, who doesn't want to give too many
details until the boys are here and in the classrooms. They
include two 6-3 forwards and a pair of guards, 6-1 and 5-11.
The five starters from last year's team are Joe Smith
and Tom HOfferth at forward, Lee Collins at center, and
Jackie Hufford and Paul Goldsmith at guard. All but Gold
smith averaged in double figures last season. Hofferth, short
stop on the baseball team, isn't taking part in spring drills.
Forward Art Smejkal (pronounced SMIKE-el) and Guard
Jack Neeley are back and both are "looking good" says John
son. They each have to pass 24 hours of school work by the
end of summer school to be eligible at the beginning of next
season. That is one uncertainty.
Another cause of concern is the possibility of Hufford's
getting drafted. Hufford's status is currently in doubt and
he won't know for certain whether or not he'll be back until
he gets his grades this semester. The Sphinx was generally
conceded to be the most underrated player in the state last
year.
"Lee Collins looks good and is continuing to improve,"
says Johnson of his 6-6 center. The big pivot man made a
lot of progress during the past season and should be one of
the best in the conference at his position next year.
Johnson also praised Smith and Hufford for their work in
the spring drills.
Guard Jimmy Cauthen of Hartsville and Forward Jerry
Redmond of Lexington are two freshmen that Johnson thinks
will be able to help the varsity next year. Joe Frederick, a
third freshman, has missed several drills because of quizzes,
but Johnson indicated that the 6-3 guard would also help out
next year.
The possibility exists that the team will split up for an
intra-squad game at the close of practice. Johnson said that
he hoped a game could be arranged and that the players were
in favor. But the exam schedule might be too pressing and
there are several other factors which might prevent such a
game from coming off.
UNLUCKY IS THE WORD
Carolina's Heyward Tunstall is probably the unluckiest
pitcher in the Atlantic Coast Conference.
Heyward has the best earned run average on the Game
cock mound staff and has given up only five earned runs in
his last 29 innings, but still hasn't officially won a game
this spring. He has lost four.
His last three starts were a 3-1 loss to N. C. State in
which the Birds got just one hit, a 4-3 14-inning win over
Georgia with Johnny Cooley getting credit for the win after
pitching only one inning, and Tuesday's 2-0 loss to Clemson
in which both runs were unearned. Only two of the three
runs scored by Georgia against Heyward in 13 innings were
earned.
Last year he finished with a 3-4 won-lost record.
Heyward's earned run average is currently 3.18, lower
than the 3.55 he had at the end of last year.
He has struck out 27 and walked only 15 which is an
excellent record in that respect.
It just goes to show how misleading a won-lost record can
be for rating a pitcher.
CAUGHT ON THE HOOK . .. Frank Selvy is still in the
news. The basketball All-American from Furman recently
pitched an 18-9 softball virgory in intramural play, according
to the Furman Hornet . . . Sonny Gray, sports editor of the
Gamecock last semester, came in'with the best sports story
of the year in the South Carolina Collegiate Press Association
judging with his write-up of the USC-Wake Forest football
game last fall . . . Ed Rast was the only member of the
baseball team to pull his average up against Billy O'Dell and
Clemson Tuesday. Rast collected two solid hits, one a long
double, and hit the ball on the nose his other two times at
bat, to raise his mark to .308 from .222. Rast now has 4
for 13 . .. About 400 fans turned out for the first round of
the Intramural boxing program held last Monday night in
the field house. The fighting was spirited, although there
were a few mismatches, and an even larger crowd is expected
for tonight's finals. There Is no admission charge and the
first fight begins at 7:30.
