Here are some more r641"ings that I'm sure you'll find good listening: "String Along" by the Ames Brothers; our friend Ray An thony's "When the Saints Go Marching In"; "Ruby" by Richard ayman (this is the instrumental sed as the soundtrack for the movie by the same name); and "Heart and Soul" by the Four Aces. Following her success with "Why Don't You Believe Me," Joni James has made another hit in "Let There Be Love." Joni also has made a wonderful recording of the old favorite "I'll Be Seeing You." "September Song" Is beau tifully done by Stan Kenton on a Capital record. To my Dorsey and his or chesOM have a fine long playing record which includes "Beale Street Blues," "Swanee River," "Deep River" and "Then I'll Be Happy." From an album of "The Eddie Cantor Story," the sound track includes "Ida," "Makin' Whoopee," "One Hour With You," and "Ma, He's Making Eyes at Me." Albums Ray Anthony's "I Remember Glenn Miller" album takes a dif ferent approach to the Miller legend and the Miller music. Glenn hired Ray and his trumpet to play with the Miller band In 1941, when Anthony was all of 18 years old. Now Ray, with a band of his own, has taken such Miller tunes as "Tuxedo Junction," "In The Mood," "Elmer's Tune," "Chattanooga Choo Choo" and "Ida" and arranged them to fit his own dance-band style. These re creations are sharp and full of life; they make a fitting com panion to the RCA Victor Glenn Miller album. F&4tk Sinatra's "Songs for Young Lovers" is particularly distinguished by the selection of songs-"My Funny Valentile," "Little Girl Blue," "A Foggy Day," "Like Someone in Love" and his nearly perfect delivery of these romantic classics. Frank has fine backing from Nelson Riddle's orchestra, too; it's one of his best sets-and that's going some. Singles "Cabbages and Kings." Vocal Ist Charlie Applewhite, a youthful newcomer from Texas, may be slight of build, but his large swelling tone -- somewhere be tween a baritone and a tenor doesn't let Texas down. Charlie has recently been taken under Milton Berle's wing on the weekly Milton Berle Show. The most re cent couples a resounding roman tic ode, "Cabbages and Kings" with a tune penned by Uncle Miltie himself, "You're All That I Need." For another engaging waxing personality, hear his first release, "I Love Paris" and "Ebb Tide." With both of these, your Applewhite collection will be on its way. "Solfeggio" (a musical term referring to a vocal exercise based on agsingle syllable) is an un usualTy delightful, witty creation in the manner of a medieval madrigal or part song. It's com (psed by Robert Maxwell, whose arp leads a small combination. The melody features The Ray Charles Singers. Their vocal con sists of singing notes of the scale, do mi aol do, in stunning arrange ment. Solfeggio, an M-G-M re lease, is one of the most out atanding pop releases in many months. "The Doll Dance," a charming little tune, rounds out the ingle. Tony Martin "Th s What a Rainy Day Is For," "Look Out, I'm Romantic." Tony Martin sang these ballads for the first time in his M-G-M mnovie, "Easy to Love," and he re peats his engaging chore for a pleasant RCA Victor single. "Answer Me, My Love" is the romantic word from Nat "King" Cole on his recent Capitol release, and the ballad is very pleasing to the ear. "Why," another essay of love, is on the reverse, and Nelson Riddle's band hits a fine dance beat. "A Little More Of Your Amor," and "I Had To Kiss You," recorded directly from the sound track of M-G-M's "Latin Lover,," are sung by a Latin-American fellow, name of Carlow Ramires, in a captivat ing baritone. His first number is exotic and gay, the second poig nant, and each comes across with a grreat helping of his arsaallty. Delta Sigma Pi Initiates Three New Members Beta Gamma chapter of the International Fraternity of Delta Sigma Pi initiated three mem bers in April. The new members were Ernest T. Reich of New York City, John P. Fruit of Columbia, and Howard L. Rhodes of Lake City. Following the formal initiation, a banquet was held at Henry's Restaurant on Millwood Avenue. Delta Sigma Pi held an informal dance at the Cayce Women's Club Saturday, May 1. Several mem bers of the local Alumni Club attended the dance. Delta Sigma. Pi is a Professional Fraternity in the field of Business Administration. By HANNAH TIMMONS "April showers bring. May flowers," and they bring new fashions and plenty of use for raincoats, umbrellas, and galoshes. Especially pretty are raincoats with matching caps or umbrellas. Plastic raincoats with matching boots are good for these warm, summer showers when the rain coat you've been wearing all win ter is just too hot. They are easy to carry around, too, after the brief sprinkle is over. Pretty tans are as popular as ever this year. A number of girls are sporting dark, even tans, but a few unfortunate souls who get too much sun the first time are suffering the inevitable, peeling resulti. It pays to take it moder ately and to use a good sun-tan lotion, especially if you have fair skin. Dusters Tops on the fashion parade this spring are dusters made to match your dress. Linen is a pretty and fashionable fabric. Either two contrasting colors or two dif ferent shades of a color make a fashionable outfit consisting of dress and duster with cuffs or other trimming the color of the dress. Pretty, and cool too, are sun dresses with matching stoles. Stoles may be worn belted or loose, or the dress may be worn without it. Halter top sundresses with bare backs are popular sum mer attire. Sports Everyone seems to be sporting the ever popular mix-or-match sports outfits. The whole set in cludes pedal pushers, Bermuda shorts, shorts, choice of two hal ters, blouse, jacket, and cap. Some sets are all one color; others are trimmed with contrasting plaids or stripes. Full cottons over a multitude of petticoats are tops for dates right now, especially the ones with cool-looking low necks. Before long, frosted voiles, organdies, and sther sheers will be tops for dates and parties. Feet seem to be graduating from shoes into sandals. Sandals f the crossed-strap or the bare toot type are high on the list for "just bummin' around." In the line of bathing suits, the unusual has taken the field. Students Have Chance To GoAbroad Programs for Junior year and craduate study abroad are listed n Group Study Abroad 1954-55, pamphlet recently published by ,he Institute of International E.a !ation, 1 East 67th Street, New york City. ' The study opportunities for American college students are in D4nmark, France, Germany, Italy, Mexico, Peru, Spain, Sweden, and Switzerland. General purpose of the junior year programs is to give the American student an opportunity to live in another country, to ac quire fluency in another language, to understand the culture of an other people, and at the same time, to earn credit toward a bachelor's degree from his own college in the U. S. All junior year programs listed in Group Study Abroad are under the supervision of an American faculty member who supplements the regular university courses with lectures, reports, and examinations. Colleges Smith College offers junior year programs in Paris, Geneva, Flor ence, and Madrid. Both men and women may apply for the Italian and Spanish programs. In Paris, Florence, and Madrid the students will live with local families. Sweetbriar College offers a junior year in France. The Rosary College Foreign Study Plan of fers work for junior year women at the Institut de Hautes Etudes in Fribourg, Switzerland. Reid Hall in Paris will take a group of junior college graduates who wish to spend an academic year in Paris to gain further knowledge of French civilization. Wayne University arranges-a junior year in Munich. Mexico City College offers a junior year program for Amer icans as well as four-year college work and graduate courses. Mex ico City College was founded in 1940 to provide an opportunity for American students to study .in Mexico under American college methods and standards, and obtain credit toward a degree at their home college. Graduate Course Middlebury College offers grad uate courses in Paris and Madrid. Graduate women may study music and art at the Pius XII Institute, Villa Schifanoia, Florence. The University of San Marcos in Peru gives graduate work in Peruvian literature, economy, history, geog raphy, archaeology, and Spanish. Americans may take graduate courses conducted in English at universities in Sweden and Den mark. The University of Stock holm has an International Grad uate School for English-Speaking Students. The Danish Graduate School for Foreign Students is held at the Universities of Copen hagen and Aarhus. Group Study Abroad can be ob tained from the Inform~ation and Counseling Division of the Insti tute. C. as the guest of Encyclopaedia Britannica will be 'he prize for the foreign student, studying in the United States, who writes the best essay on the sub lect of "How to Strengthen Democracy in the Free World." The competition is the climax ing event in the year-long "Inter national Forum" produced Fridays over the Kate Smith Hour on the National Broadcasting Company's television network. Ted Collins, producer of the Kate Smith show, originated the "Internattonal Forum" to give students from abroad who are studying in Amer ican colleges the opportunity to speak to the nation on how their countries and the United States can better work together in the interests of peace under freedom. On the Friday programs, youths from more than a score of foreign nations, who are studying in American colleges, have appeared with Ted Collins and Kate Smith to review their impressions of the United States, to explain the back grounds of events in their own na tions, and to discuss ways to strengthen freedom. Foreign Students Eligible Any student from abroad who is studying in an American col lege or university may enter the current essay competition, which was jointly announced today by Mr. Collins and Robert C. Preble, president of Encyclopaedia Bri tannica. The essays must not be more than 1,000 words in length, and should give the writer's own views of how to strengthen dem ocracy in the free world. WUSC Announces Third In Series Of Science Fiction WUSC has announced that the second of its science-fiction series, "Destination Unknown," has been presented. The third in the series, "Santa Claus Planet" will be pre sented today at 10 p.m. on WUSC. "Santa Claus Planet" is the story of a man alone on a planet whose natives have the most brutal economic system that has ever existed. The remaining stories in the "Destination Unknown" series will be presented each Friday night at 10 p.m. for the rest of the semester.
