DIAMOND PROSPECTS BRIGHTEN
The current series of pre-season baseball games with Fort
Jackson, which conie to a close today, has pit a defilnitely
optimistic outlook on Carolina's prospects.
As this is written the Gamecocks have met Jax three
times and lost three times, but that doesn't tell anything.
Fort Jackson's ballplayers are well above the average
collegiate level. They have leyward Sullivan, the ex-U. of
Florida quarterback who signed a bonus contract with the
Red Sox for an est iniated $40,000; Faye Thronebury, out
fielder for the lted Sox ; Bill ILarriiigton, one of the top
pitchers in the Sally I eague in 1952 with Savannah, who put
in the tail end of that season with the Philadelphia Athletics,
and a number of high chissification inhior leaguers.
PjIrICHjING IS PLEASING
Especially pleasing to C oacli Ted Peto;key has been the
way his pitchers have shown up, with letterman Gene Molnar
particularly surprising. Molnar, who has been no ball of
fire in the past, shut out the soldiers for three innings last
Friday and held them scoreless again \londay for the several
innings that he worked. Petoskey says .1olnar "has looked
very good."
le repeated the same good words in praise of Heyward
Tunstall and Johni' Coolevy for tlhcir work in the practice
series. Tuinistall started last Vriday's game and worked again
Tuesday. Cooley pitched some Alonday and is scheduled to
start today's game.
These three, along with lIeyvard's twin brother IlowarLd,
will form t lie front liiie pitching staff and handle most of the
starting assignments. Ihoward\ was hit on his pitchiig arm
last week by a line drive and won't be rely to pitch for
another week or so. le started thmrowiig a little Tuesday
an(d his progress has been encouiragiiig to Petoskey.
Several experiments are being tried, probably the most
interesting fit which is a serious riA (of lill Wohrman as
a pitcher.
"Wohrman has the arm.'' sa.s l'etoskey, "andl he sur
prised me with his control in balling practice. He threw a
few pretty good wrinkles. too."
Wohrnmn has been inoved in to ihird base from the
outfield and has made Petoskevy fel o)ptinistic witi his play
ing there, too. IIe also collected a cmiple tft hits Tuesday as
did first baseiian Al Spot ts. Htoli m1n1 wre nO toriously weak

Carolina's track team opens its
outdoor season here tomorrow
afternoon against Presbyterian
with the field events scheduled to
begin at 2:00 p.m. and the running
events starting at 2:30. The meet
will be held at Davis Field.
Coach Weems Baskin has stated
that it will still be a couple of
weeks before the tracksters hit
their peak and that he doesn't ex
pect any outstanding times to be
made tomorrow.
But Garn McBride, standout
distance man for the Gamecocks,
ran a 9.47 two-mile in the Atlantic
Coast Conference indoor meet sev
eral weeks ago, which is 17 seconds
under the state record for that
event. Another event on which
plenty of attention will be focused
is the 100-yard dash. Tommy
Woodlee, state record holder with
a 9.7 mark, is back after two years
in the Coast Guard. Woodlee
didn't run in the ACC finals be
cause of a pulled muscle suffered
in the trials.
McBride Faces Fesperman
McBride will run against PC's
John Fesperman, the defending
state two-mile champ, who ran the
distance in 10:15.2 last year in the
state meet.
Sonny Wileher and Freddy
Roberts, the sophomore flashes
from Macon, will be favored in the
quarter and half mile respectively.
Roberts set a state record of
1:57.5 for the half-mile last year
and Wilcher was unbeaten in dual
competition.
Hurdler Don Whetstone and
weights man Joe DeFore have both
been taking it easy, Coach Baskin
said, but they will be able to take
part in tomorrow's meet.
Whetstone pulled a muscle in
the indoor meet and DeFore has
been suffering from a shoulder in
jured in winter football drills.
