The 1954 Intramural basketball
campaign started with a bang last
Tuesday night and will continue
in full swing until March 4, at
which time the finals will be held
to decide the masters of the hard
woods at USC, intramurally
speaking.
The league set-up is the same
as in the past with two Indepen
dent Leagues and two Fraternity
Leagues. It seems that basketball
is just about the most popular
spqrt here at Carolina as more
teains are entered in basketball
than football or volleyball.
Independent League Number
One is composed of ten teams with
the big threat in that league last
years' defending league and cam
pus champs in the "persons" of
Block C. A few men have gone
from last season's aggregation but
such players as Joe Silas and Fred
Duckett will be back to harrass
the opposition. Silas was one of
the big guns on last years' team
and was one of the outstanding
players in intramural circles.
Independent League Number
Two is composed of eight teams
and Maxey will be tagged as the
team to beat, in lieu of their an
nexing last years' crown in this
league. It seems that.each floor
of Maxey had a team last year
but this year there will only be
one team rep)resenting Maxcy so
their threat looks even greater.
Over in the Fraternity set-up
and in league one in particular,
there are six teams with Pi Kappa
Phi, last years' All-Campus kings
again looking strong. The Pi Kaps
have lost a lot of last seasons'
strength but still should not be
counted out. Other strong teams
are Sigma Nu, whose first string
does not contain a man less than
sig feet tall. Heading the list of
players here is Phil Moody, Billy
Walter and George Wilson. The
Oteam is coached by "Rat" Brantley.
Word is out that the Kappa Alpha
five will be nothing to sneeze at.

Over in the other Fraternity
league there are six teams and
things will be led by last years'
title holders, Phi Kappa Sigma.
They will be looking good this
year with some necessary changes
necessary due to graduations.
Other potential powers in this
league are SAE, and Sigma Chi
who is always in contention in
intramural play.
In talking with Student Intra
mural Director Artie Knight,
some changes in rules and regula
tions were noted. Two forfeits
means an automatic drop from the
league and a deduction of a certain
amount of points. Each team will
be given fifteen minutes to show
up and thereafter a forfeit will be
recorded. He suggested that if a
club does not feel it can field a
team on a certain day to call the
Intramural Office and have the
game postponed to a later date
which is convenient to both teams
involved and the Intramural Of
fice. He stated that the referee
situation is pretty good but then
he can always use some more.
A look at the standings towards
the IFC All-Campus Trophy finds
Sigma Nu ahead with a total of
232 points which were compiled
with the campus volleyball crown
and fraternity football champion
ship. Other leaders are: Lambda
Chi with 191 and Sigma Chi with
174.
The schedule of next weeks'
games commencing with- the ones
tonight looks like this:

Carolina's basketballers played
one of their better games of the
season Tuesday night in the Field
House when they extended George
Washington's nationally - ranked
Colonials for three quarters be
fore finally fading in the last
stanza for a 61-52 defeat.
Guard Jackie Hufford turned in
another outstanding performance
for the Gamecocks as he scored 17
points to take top honors there
and he stole the ball often from
the sometimes bewildered Colon
ials.
Lee Collins was second in scor
ing for the Birds with 16 and was
followed by Joe Smith who lagged
behind with eight, Paul Goldsmith
six, and Tom Hofferth five. Hof
ferth was unble to score until the
final quarter.
The defeat gave Carolina a 7-11
won-lost record.
Last week the Gamecocks split
a pair of games, beating Davidson's
Wildcats, 96-73, and losing to
Wake Forest by a 77-62 count.
Three Gamecocks topped the 20
point mark against Davidson as
Collins dropped in 24, Smith 23
and Hufford 22. Hofferth added
18 for good measure.
But high man for the night was
Davidson's Hobby Cobb with 28
points.
Wake Forest had too much
Dickie Hemrie for the Gamecocks.
Hemric exhibited his usual consist
ancy, poise and ability as he
banged away for 29 points and
held Carolina's Lee Collins to six
points. Hemiric's edge in poise and
experience proved too much for the
6-6 Lancaster sophomore.

In the coaching profession the
expressions "wait until next year"
and "we're building" seems to me
to mean that someone is passing
the buck. The students are tired
of waiting until next year; they
are tired of seeing teams being
built year after year. They want
to know what is going on in the
athletic department. They want
to know facts and only facts. It
seems to me that the student is
a stockholder in the firm of USC
Athletic Department. The athletic
director is duty bound to let the
student know why they spend so
much money in that department
yet get so little in return. I don't
think the student expects the
teams to win every game or to
set records every time they put
on uniforms, they just want the
teams to represent the university
in a winning fashion.
This may seem as if I am talk
ing about the basketball team. In
a way it is, and in a way it is not.
Even in football we would not have
won seven games if the one platon
system had not been in effect. This
coming season we will be short
on quarterback. Why? Couldn't
someone see that Gramling would
not be here forever? In basketball
it is anybody's guess on what is
going on. We have been building
and building ever since I have
been here. I suggest that we get
another builder if the project is
going to take this long. Why is
it that we qan afford to give so

many scholarships to the football
players and yet we can't find I
enough to give to basketball.
Why? Why is it that we have
one of the' best basketball players
in the state of South Carolina at
this university yet we can not
give him a scholarship. Again
why? Why encourage boys to
come out for the basketball if they
have to sit on the bench the entire I
season? I think you can build 1
better men by letting them play 3
if that is what we are after.
The answer to some of these
question is only to obvious. The
Athletic department thinks that if
they devote their time and money
to football, to build a football
machine that will be placed in the
top 10 in the nation, then the minor
sports will take care of them
selves. Now I ask you, how is it
that North Carolina State has a
good basketball team, yet they
don't have a good football team?
Why is that Clemson has sent
several football teams to bowls in
the past years, yet they have
never had a good basketball team.
No, I'm sorry but to me that
doesn't sound logical. It seems to
me if you want a good basketball
team you have to go out and find
boys that can play basketball, if
you want to have a good swimming
team you have to go out and get
good swimmers. North Carolina
State doesn't wait until the
players come to them; they go out
and find the material.

I'm not trying to be overbear
ng. I know that athletic depart
nents just can't pick good ath
etes off a street corner, but the
nain point is that somebody
:nows where they can be found.
.et's look at things as they really
ire, not by saying wait until next
rear. If something is wrong with
team let's find out what it is
mnd do something about it now,
oecause even if we improve next
rear it only stands to reason that
he other teams will improve also.
A good place to start is with the
wimming team. Not one boy on
he swimming team receives any
inancial aid from the athletic de
)artment. No free meals, no free
)ooks, no free nothing. If it is
,rue that we give scholarships to
hose boys that need it and are
)articipating in the athletic pro

.ook a little walk over to the swim
ning pool. Keep swimming boys,
