While it may not be physically the roughest, from a point of view of personal contact, track at Carolina may well be the most dangerous of sports. Between dodging fly balls and outfielders and keeping a wary eye open for stray football players on Melton Field it takes on a number of risks. With the opening of the track season just around the corner we'll take a look at the prospects. First the season will open with the first Atlantic Coast Conference indoor meet at Chapel Hill, N. C. on Feb. 26 and 27. With all but one of last year's fine team returning and Tommy Woodlee back from service, the cinder team ought to make a good name for themselves. Only Ernie Hulon, who is still in school but ineligible, will be missing. Last year's top scorers were Sonny Wilcher with 781/ points, Bobby Drawdy, 67, Freddy Roberts 481%t, Gene Berry 40, Jack Martin 33 7/10, Garn McBryde 33, and Joe Silas 32. Wilcher was a consistant winner last year in the 220 and 440 and anchored the state championship mile relay team. Ie was unbeaten in dual competition in the 440 and came in third in that event in the Southern Conference out door meet. Drawdy ran the 100 and 220-yard dashes and threw the javilan. His top time for the 100 was 9.9. With Woodlee, who has done the 100 in 9.7, the Gamecocks are going to be very hard to beat in the shorter dashes. Woodlee is also a crack 220 man. Roberts set a new state record in the 880 last year with a time of 1:57.5. He finished fourth in the Southern Con ference meet and also ran a leg on the mile relay team. He, Wilcher, Woodlee and a fourth man yet to be selected will probably comprise this year's mile relay team which should be one of the tops in the conference. Herry got most of his points in the javilan last year. Ile also performed in the broad jump. Martin did his point-making in the high hurdles and high .jump. McBryde would have been much higher on the point list had he not missed much of the season because of injuries. le excels in the mile and half-mile and with good luck regarding injuries could make the Gamecocks very strong in the distance events. Jack Blair is another good distance man who missed much of last season because of injuries. Blair and Allen Inabinet run the two-mile and Blair also doubles up in the mile. Most of the weight men will report late because of spring tootball practice. The two most important boys here are Ihe two good Joes from Macon-Joe Defore and Joe Silas. Both compete in the shot put and discus. Charlie Camp will aid here, too. Probably the strongest field event will be the pole vault wvith Ted Robinson and Smoky Darouse back. Robinson got as high as 13 feet in one of the dual meets and won the state title. He made tremendous progress during the course of the season. Don Whetstone and Phil Spotts will be back to aid in the huiirdlecs.
