Thati the theme of a new collegiate fic tion contest, and a national scienc fiction magazine is paying $2,00 for the answers. With submission limited exclusively to undergradu ates in the United States an Canada, students will present thei prophesies in the form of a 10,000 word novelette, basing their predic tions on classroom work, their ow interpretations of the trends toda and their imaginations. The form of a novelette has bee selected as a medium by the editor of IF Magazine, sponsor of th contest, because 10,000 words ca be handled more easily by amateu writers than a long novel, whic requires too much time and ex perience. The editors believe ther are a great many young people i colleges who would like to expres their ideas and fancies on the sub g4ct if given the opportunity PVofessional writers attending col lege will not be eligible to enter. Ideas, imagination and plausibil ity will count more than actus writing skill. The background ca be any phase of life. The seen can be a city, village or the coun try. Plots can be built around profession, a family group or single character. First pife is $1,000 in cash with six runners-up receiving a additional $1,000 in prizes. C. McCall, head of the Personnel Bureau, has announced. All students who plan to register for the spring semester should take part in the program in order to qualify for registration priority in February. Students have been divided into seven groups for pre-registration. Group one is composed of prospec tive teachers in the elementary and high schools of South Carolina. New candidates for teacher train ing should visit Dean Travelstead in Wardlaw College during Curri culuni Counseling Week. Advanced sophomore, juniors, and seniors in the College of Arts and Science should report.to their major professor for guidance. Freshman and first semester soph omores in this school will meet with Dean Norwood in the chapel. Pre-medical and pre-dental stu dents below junior rank will obtain proper forms from Dr. J. T. Pen ney- in LeConte College. Juniors and seniors will consult Dr. Penney and their major professor. Patterson, (lean of administration, has an nounced. Work on the three units, which cost approximately $7,500 apiece, was begun the first of July. Each unit contains six apartments, with an average of two students to the apartment. Units one and two are occupied by graduate students, and unit three will be occupied by seniors. Completely remodeled on the in side as well as the outside, the new (orms are virtually fireproof be cause of metal stairs and a sprin kler system. The interior is finished in yellow pine paneling, and built-in desks and bookshelves of the same material are provided in each apartment. Floors are covered with asphalt tile. Mr. Patterson said that the uni- g versity considers the new dorms C an excellent investment. The new - lodgings cost a little over $500 per student, which is less than 25 per cent of what new (orms would have cost per student. Law Students Hear Address S By Tom Pope Tom Pope, prominent attorney n from Newberry, addressed the Law fi Federation in the fourth in a series vi of lectures Thursday morning at il 11:00 at the Law School. In an address titled "The First al Ten Years" Mr. Pope presented the e< prospects the beginning lawyer of faces in the law world. In addition m to law students members of the F general public were present at the I lecture. S( Outstanding in the law field, Mr. I Pope is a member of the S. C. and American Bar Associations and the ir American Judicature Society. In a addition Mr. Pope was a candidate ti in last year's S. C. gubernatorial or election. In 1949-50 he was speaker fi of the South Carolina House of U Representatives. A graduate of The Citadel, Mr. Pope has practiced law at New berry since earning his LL.B. degree from the University Law School in 1938 except for a period of service with the armed forces.
