Pharmacy
As Major fo:
Pharmacy, a field once com
pletely dominated by men, is be
coming increasingly popular with
women students at the university.
Today a record number of 18
university coeds are compounding
drugs and solving chemical equa
tions side by side with over 145
male students in the pharmacy
school's laboratory and classroom
sessions. This is more than half
the total of 27 women students the
school has graduated in pharmacy
in the past.
The twelve-to-one ratio of male
to female pharmacy students at the
university is almost double the na
tional ratio. This increased interest
among the women students at the
Wversity is not difficult to under
stand, considering the manifold job
opportunities available to the
woman graduate with a B.S. degree
in her hand.
Prof. Robert W. Morrison, acting
dean of the School of Pharmacy,
says there are far more opportun
ities for women pharmacists today
than there are women pharmacists.
He points out that the female
druggist finds ready and profit
able employment in a number of
fields ranging from manufacturing
companies to hospitals.
She may, of course, be employed
at once in a retail pharmacy, as
are 85 per cent of all graduates
of pharmacy schools when they
first begin their p)rofessional
career. Women have been
described as p)ossessing a combina
tion of the qualities of a scientist
and a good clerk with congenial
personalities andl patience that are
required for intelligent trans
actions with the public.
Most women registered drug
gists, however, accept positions
with research laboratories, whole
sale drug firms, manufacturing

chemists, and hospitals. The heads
of the pharmacy departments of
four large hospitals in central
South Carolina are women grad
uates of the university's school.
Government departments, in
cluding state and federal food and
drug laboratories, present still
more op)enings for women pharm
acists who may also become teach
ers of pharmacy.
During her four-year' course at
the university, the girl student
learns laboratory techniques, phar
macology, pharmaceutical chem
istry, toxicology, and the identifi
cation of official and unofficial
drugs.
She also studies new and non
official remedies, state and federal
laws governing the practice of
pharmacy and principles of drug
store management. Her hours in
the laboratory increase as the
course becomes more advancedI.
The university's school is rated
"Class A" (the top -ranking) by
the American Council on Pharnma
ceutical Education. It was ac
credited by the American Associa
tion of Colleges of Pharmacy in
1928 and by the Council in 1939.
The 18 women pharmacy stu
dents presently enrolled at the
university include Mrs. Agnes
