had gone on the field as one of
and if they had not been given t
that the Gamecocks from Sout
the game. The sportswriters -
stated the problem: If Duke is
in the top ten class, Carolina must
have a powerhouse also. Then
came three games that did not
show very much. The team never
showed much because they did not
have to. Against Citadel they
had five fumbles written on the c
record books, and still they won S
by a wide margin. Then came Vir- w
ginia. Scoring three touchdowns tj
in the second quarter, they sent P
in the reserves. Furman was next
and still the Gamecocks did not E
have to go all out to win the game. t<
What Can Gamecocks Do? S
Here is the question everyone is
asking: "What can they do when A
they have to?" This question will ti
be answered in the next five weeks
vhen Carolina will meet some of di
the best teams football has to of- D
for. Maryland, North Carolina, M
West Virginia. and Wake Forest.
These are the games in which the cc
re
Gamecocks will have to prove se
themselves. It will not be a small a
task because Maryland and West n
Virginia are members of the top f
ten teanis class, and North Caro- 1)
te
lina and Wake Forest are two vi
teams that have shown much im- w
provement since last year. Not -
to he ignored is the team that is
going to imakt some team sorry
they played them, Clemson. Clem
son has had a tough season, but
capable of winning some of their
games. In this respect they will
be all out to win the "Big Thurs
day Classic."
The main reason Carolina will
1-ve to go all out to win tomor
row's game is not that Clemson
will explode against them, but
they will be playing against the
biggest threat of the game . . .
tension. Tension has been and will
always he the biggest factor of
This game. If Carolina can play
a regular game they will win by
two touchdlowns. If they allow the
publicity of the game to influence
their dlecisions in the huddles, they
are going to loose a ball game.
Against Maryland, Carolina will
have their hands full. The Mary
land-North Carolina game will
determine whether or not the
Gamecocks have a chance to beat
the number two team in the na
tion. If Maryland wins, and they
should, Carolina will have a better
chance to upset Maryland, but on
the other hand, if North Carolina
should upset Maryland the Game
cocks would not have a chance. A|
lot will dlepend utpon the attitude|
of the Carolina players when they|
play Maryland, but most of all it|
will depend upon the attitude of|
the STUD)ENTS. If the students
turn out for the Maryland game
which will be played in Maryland,
the Gamecocks will be inspired, A
and based on inspiration, which"
a.
has won a lot of games, the (Game- A
cocks may win. C

McFadden Is
Frosh Coach
At Clemson
Banks McFadden, head fresh
man football coach at Clemson,
was the greatest athlete in Clem
son's history. During his under
graduate days at the end of the
thirties, "Bonnie Banks" made
several All-American selections in
both football and basketball. As
a track star lie set three state
inter-collegiate records that still
stand.
McFadden was the standout of
the 193!) Tiger grid team that
rolled up nine wins against a sin
gele loss during the regular season
And then surLprised Boston College
R-3 in the Cotton Bowl as a
!limax. Carolina was a 27-0 vic
tim of that team.
A 43.5-yard punting average
that year by McFadden still holds
i spot in the Clemson record book.
Except for one year in pro ball
with Brooklyn and four years in
the Air Force, McFadden has been -
a member of the Clemson coaching
staff since his graduation in 1940.
lie is also varsity basketball
coach and as freshman football
coach is assisted by A. W. (Rock)
Norman and Don Wade.

has a team that is hard to beat,
andl witih Carolina playing them on
their own ground it should be
harder. It so happens that Coach
Enright wants this game more
than pinything else. I do not know
why, but 1 do feel that the boys
are going to give it to him. I
would say Carolina by 2 points.
To sum it all up, we find that
Carolina will be playing the best
there is. We find that the stu
dlents will have to back the foot
hail team more', because when the
team is away it is harder to win,
but with the students there to
remind them, they will have a
better chance. We have a good
ball club, and we may loose some
games bu1t the main thing to re
member is this: To lie a sport in
winning is great, bu1t to be a sport
in lingn is greater.
