Steady Scorers
The Carolina combination of
Sonny Wilcher, the Macon, Ga.,

ville, has accounted for 124%
points this year and a few more
the 100, 220, and throws the
are expected to be added to this
total in the meet. Wilcher, a
freshman, has not yet been beaten
in a dual college meet. He runs
the 220 ana 440 and Drawdy races
javelin.
Wilcher showed his speed in the
Presbyterian meet, outrunning
state champ Tommy Jordan in the
220.
This year's Gamecock team,
showing eight wins and one loss,
failed to win a meet last year and
finished third behind Presbyterian
and Clemson in the state meet,
scoring only 39 points.
Clemson Beaten
In last week's demolition of
Clemson the Gamecocks showed
strength in taking 11 out of 15
possible first places. Wilcher led
the way taking firsts in the 220
and 440. He sailed across the 220
*e in 22.3. Drawdy took a first
in the 100, a second in the 220 and
third in the javelin throw.
Freddie Roberts, another fresh
man from Macon, Ga., showed
climactic form as he took the 880
in 2:008. This was the seventh
straight win in this event for
Roberts.
In the pole vault department,
Ted Robinson of Columbia and
Smokey Darouse of Baton Rouge,
La., have placed first and second
consistently and usually come out
with first and second positions in
this event. Together they have
scored 46 points.

Distance runner Gan McBride

year and Blair the two-mile king.
Others figuring greatly in
Gamecock victories are: Gene
Berry, javelin and broad jump;
Jack Martin, high jump and high
hurdles; Joe Silas, discus and shot

Summer, high and broad jump;
Allen Inabinett, two mile; and
Ernie Hulon, 440 and relay.

Track Scorers
As Season Ends
Sonny Wilcher, freshman dash
star from Macon, Ga., finished the
season as leading scorer for the
Gamecock cindermen. He has
scored 64% points, 1114 came in
the Clemson meet Saturday.
Bobby Drawdy, 100 yard, 220,
and javelin man, has 63 points for
second place. Drawdy scored nine
points against Clemson and led
the scorers until this, the last dual
meet of the season. A junior
from Eutawville, he led the team
in scoring last year with 85'i
points.
Wilcher and Drawdy have paced
the Birdmen through the entire
track season and together have
formed an almost unbeatable com
bination. Wilcher has not lost a
220 or 440 event in his college
career.
Gene Berry, javelin at.d high
jump artist, comes in third with
38 points scored. A freshman from
Columbia, he has taken four firsts
in the javelin throw an(d placed
second in the javelin and broad
jump Saturday.
Scoring 6% points in the Clem
son meet, Freddie Roberts, fresh
man, takes fourth place in the
scoring parade. He won his
seventh straight first place in the
880 against the Tigers and has
scored 34 points for the Game
cocks.
Another spark on the team is
Garn McBride, who has scored
30 points in the mile and 880.
McBride, last year's mile and half
mile champ, has been sitting out
the past few meets with injuries
and may not run in the state meet
Friday and Saturday. McBride is
from Columbia.
Other big point-makers are:
Jack Martin, 32% in the high
jump and high hurdles; Joe Silas,
27 in the discus andl shot put; Joe
Defore, 27 in the shot put; Jim
Summer, 30 in the high and broad
jump; Ted Robinson, 23% in the
pole vault; Smokey Darouse 22
1/3 in the pole vault; Allen Ina
binet, 27 in the two mile; and
Ernie Hulon, 19 in the 440 and
relay.
Jack Blair, state two mile champ
last year for the Gamecocks, pulled
a leg muscle early this season and
made his second appearance Sat
urday in the Clemson meet, cap
tured a first place in the one mile
run.

Sigma Chi defended its inter
fraternity track title by nipping
a surprising SAE team by a half
point in a meet that was not
decided until the last event. Ten
fraternities were represented in
the meet held by the intramural
department on Davis Field May 1.
Probably the outstanding mark
set at the meet came in the high
jump when Sigma Nu freshman Al
Bollinger cleared an even six feet.
This was only one-fourth of an
inch below the winning jump at
last year's state track meet held
at Clinton.
The Farr Mile Trophy went to
another freshman, Bob Peterson,
an independent who came through
in 5:28.7. As an independent
Peterson was not awarded points
for first place.
SAE gained four first places and
winning Sigma Chi copped three
firsts. No individual gained more
than one first place.

By SONNY GRAY.
Staff Reporter
A Gamecock track team, recent
victors of a crucial meet with
arch-rival Clemson, has established
an 8-1 record for the season, and
thus produced the winningest
sports team of the 1952-53 school
year-.
One of the main reasons for- this
sudlden surge towvard( track glory
is pointedl to the combined efforts
of a number of talented freshmen.
These freshmen, plus the depend
able service of the veteran mem
bers of the squad, have provided
Carolina with a very successful
season.
Although the Gamecocks do hold
a highly commendable 8-1 record
this season, no state' records ap
pear in immediate dlanger. Just
how do this year-'s men compare
with Carolina greats of the past?
Tommy Woodlee, former USC
dashmian, holds the 100-yard dash
record of 9.7 se'onlds established
in 1934. Bobby Drawdy, p)resent
dashman, has won the 100 con
sistently this season, but his best
time is 9.9 seconds.
Other r-ecords set by former
Carolina stars are: "Scooter"
Rucks, 220-yard dash, 21.6 sec
onds set in 1948; Rucks also set
the state record in the 440-yard
dash in 48.5 seconds. This too was
