Dellinger Vance Johnson Is Named University Players President Vance Johnson, of Columbia, has been elected president of Carolina's Dramatic Clb for the spring term, succeeding Gene Shaw, of Charleston. Other offi cers elected were: Alton Brown, of Wellford, vice-president and Delight Tiemann, of Columbia, secretary. The University players are planning a heavy schedule this year. Things were slow last semester due to the fact that the players had no permanent meeting place, but they hope to produce at least three plays this semester. The new theater is now under construction. Anyone who has any special talent such us acting, singing, dancing, etc., or even desiring to learn is welcome to join. Dr. J. J. Petty Has Article In Encyclopedia Dr. Julian J. Petty of the Uni versity dlepartment of geography, geology and mineralogy, is the winner of an extensive article describing the state in the latest edition of Collier's Encyclopedia. Doctor Petty's article, which covers 11 pages and is illustrated with nine photographs and a two page map of South Carolina, in cludes dlescriptions of the states' topography, water resources, cli mate, soil, forests and parks. It also tells of South Carolina's minerals and mining, its agricul ture, animal industries, manufac turing and transportation. Govern ment and politics, banking and finance, social and cultural activ ities and population are also dealt * with. Another section goes into ' h istory of the state.. In addition to the encyclopedia article, Doctor Petty is the author of another article on the state which will appear later in the Collier's Yearbook. AFRIOTC Presents Radio ProdneItionI ? "This Is Your Air Force ROTC," a fifteen-minute radlio prodIuction will be presented week ly beginning on Saturday, Feb ruary 28, over Radio Station WMSC by the cadets of the Uni versity of South Carolina Air Force ROTC unit, Col. Herbert E. Sears, professor of air science andi tacties announcedl. The program will feature the singing of a quartet comphlosed of Cadets Stanley Hamilton of Knoxville, Tenn.; D)ennis Dellinger of Greenwood; Eugene Brantley of Chester and Richard Reyes of Co lumbia. Martial music will be furnished by the 85-piece AFROTC band, *and dlance music will be presented by a band under the direction of Bill r,onmas of Coluim bia. The vocals will be sung by Reyes, who has appeared with dance bands ina New York. Work is rapidly nearing com pletion on the building with the workers now painting the out side. A complete remodeling job has been done on the three floor building which was formerly used as a sorority house. Seniors Offered Physics Fellowships University seniors majoring in chemistry, physics or engineering are eligible for Atomic Energy Commission - sponsore(I graduate fellowships in radiological physics for the 1953-54 school year. Up to 75 fellowships may be awarded, with fully-accredited graduate study to be carri'ed out in three locations. One program is operated by the University of Rochester and Brookhaven Nation al Laboratory, another by the University of Washington and the Hlanford Works of the AEC, and the third by V'anderbilt University and the Oak Rtidge National Laboratory. In eac-h c-ase, nine months of course work at the un iversity is followed by three nionths of addi - tionalI study and field trtaining at the c-ooperating A l'C installation. The program Is accredited for graduate-level training leading towar-d an advanced degree. Basic stipends for fellowvs is $1600 per- year, with an allowance of $350 if marriedi and $35t0 for each . dependent c-hildi. University tuition and reqluired fees will be paid by the Oak Ridge Institute of Nuclear- Studies, which adnminister-s the program for the A EC.
