Burne Boxers Pla To Va. Moi The fighting Gamecocks will be after their third straight victory of the season when they meet the Virginia Cavaliers in the Field house Monday night at 8 o'clock. The Gamecocks, who are pres ently rated aa one of the two top teams in the South, should be favored over the Cavaliers after convincing victories over Maryland and The Citadel, but all the bouts are expected to be fairly close. Two of the more prominent members of the Gamecock squad may be making their final home appearance in this bout. They are Emmett Gurney, from Norfolk, Va., one of the all-time boxing greats at Carolina, and present SIBT welterweight champ, and Chuck Davis, of Sylacauga, Ala., one of the most dependable Game cock point-makers and runner up in the lightweight division of last year's SIBT tournament. Gurney has two victories to his credit this season. Showing a dis play of power-punching, he TKO'd Maryland's Bob Theofield in the second round and gained a wide decision over The Citadel's Mike Coppola. Gurney has lost but one meet in three years of college competi tion, and will be looking for his 12th in a row Monday night.. Gurney's lone defeat came at the hands of Danny Orsak of Louisiana .State in 1951, but the Gamecock knock-out artist has since beaten Orsak four times. In tournament competition, Gurney won the SIBT champion ship the last two years and was voted the tourney's most outstand ing fighter last year. Gurney lost by split decisions in the NCAA finals in 1951 and semi-finals in 1952. The Air Force ROTC was Gurney's backer as he stepped out of college circles and won the sectional Olympic tryouts in San Antonio rexas last spring and advanced to the semi-finals of the Olympic elimination process at Kansas City. Virginia will submit Grice Whitley to the Gurney test Mon day night. Gurney disposed of Whitley in the second round last year, but Whitley defeated Miami's Billy Parker this season. Davis, likewise, has two vic tories this year. He defeated Gary Fisher of Maryland and Rosatta of The Citadel, but will be up against Johnny Fite of Virginia, with whom lhe dIrew last year. Last year, Davis had a 5-3-1 recordl and advanced to the SIBTI finals wvhere he lost to Calvin Clary of LSUJ. His victories were over Nolan (GYMCA), Theofield, (Md.), Putname (Citadel), and Granger' (Syracuse); he lost to Clary twvice and Sreenan of Syracuse in the NCAA tourna m ent. Coach Alderman will be depend ing on Davis andl Gurney to pro vide "safety" points Mqnday night, and these two teamed with 1:32 p)ounder, Andy Sciambra, should provide. a running start for the Gamecocks. Sciambra, who can hardly have any more praise than he has al ready rated, will be the main attraction, along with Gurney. Block C In As Basketh Intramural basketball started Wednesday night with seven games played and one forfeit registered. Block C scored the most points as they smashed Ten, 9 73-23. Joe Silas was top scorei for the winners with 24 points. Bill Ameen marked up 16 for the losers. The evening's high indivi dual point performance came ir Sig Eps' 69-47 rout of Phi Epsilor Pi when Frank Hall poured in 4( points. Irv Liskov got 24 for th< Pi Eps. In other fraternity competitior Pi Kappa Phi, defending campu, champs, got a forfeit over Kapps Sig. Sac picked up an early 49 33 win over Sigma Nu. Lynr Tompkins threw in 20 points for the victors. Sigma Chi came out with a fairly close 37-28 win ovei ATO. Jimmy Cox had 12 for the Sigma Chi's. Phi Sigma Kappai nipped Pi Kappa Alpha 37-31. Jim Birowvn was high man in the fina] game of the night in which Phi Kaps downed KA 49-42. Brown had 18. McBryde put the skids under Preston 3rd 418-27 in the other Independent division game. Approximately 200 games are scheduled to be played this season in intramural competition. The victory was worth 50 points to the winners in the intramural point system. Led by the running and passing 1g of "Tut" Vernon the Twenty r- Niners scored once in each half et and kept the fraternity boys out to of touchdown land until the final two minutes of the game. The first touchdown came when, with the ball on the Pi Kaps, seven-yard line, Vernon passed over the 1!middle to "Goot" Taylor who raced into the end zone to climax a 40 yard drive. Vernon's pass for the extra point was no good. On the third play after the kick Russell Stokes had a long pass intercepted by Vernon on t Burney 21. Two short passes from Verno to Ralph "Scoop" Gregory netted 10 yards and a long pass from Vernon to Turner covered 31 yards and put the ball on the Pi Kaps 18. An eight-yard toss to Taylor followed two incomplete passes by Vernon. On last down Vernon dodged two on-rushing Pi Kaps linemen and then hit Gene Porter in the deep, righthand corner of the end zone with a bull's-eye t*, for the second TD. Porter caught a pass in the left flat for the extra point. The Pi Kaps got a drive started after the kick-off but it fizzled out on the Burney 12-yard marker. Russell Stokes completed five passes on this march to Leon Jeffords, John D. Long, Karl Shealy, and Doodle Munn twice. Vernon picked up yardage run ning for Ten. 29 but, was tagged for a five-yard loss by Jeffords on third down forcing a punt to the Pi Kaps 35. Stokes found the range with a pass to Munn that put the fraters on the independent 26-yard line. Two runs through the line by Stokes crossed the first down marker. Stokes' picked up four yards through the right side and then completed A pass to Munn in the end zone for the score. Stokes connected with Jeffords for the extra point.
