Ifigh School Stud .Exhibited In Max One of the finest collections of paintings of high school artists ever assembled in the state is Tow on display in the Maxey College gallery. These paintings, submitted for the fourth annual High School Art Exhibition, are "by far the best" entered during --the four years, according to Prof. John M. Batcheller and Prof. Edmund Yaghjian of, respectively, the University Extension Division and the Fine Arts Department, joint sponsors of the exhibition. They showed marked superiority in technique, originality and the use of new forms, in the opinion of the professors, to paintings submitted in previous years. The total of 114 entries is less than Cigarette Co. Has Position Open For Co-ed A leading cigarette manufac turer has announced an opening for a co-ed representative on the campus. The requirements for the job require the student to be willing to spend a minimum of five hours per week on the job. She should have an interest in advertising and sales promotion. It is not im perative that the applicant be a smoker. The job offers good pay for the time spent plus an opportunity for advancement with a national ad vertising organization if the stu dent has a continued interest and proves capable. Applications will be accepted at the Student Activities office from Feb. 6 through Feb. 14. Further details may be obtained there. The paintings were selected by art teachers from the work of students in Orangeburg, Florence, Rock Hill, Edgefield, Parker High at Greenville, Ridgeland, Eau Claire, Columbia, Dreher, Univer sity' High, Greenwood, Conway and Dillon. Among those that quickly catch the eye are a water color of a swamp 'by Billy Long, University High; a water color back yard view of a house by Laurie Farr of Dreher; an oil portrait of a young girl by Edna B. Hunger piller of Edgefield, and four water colors of birds and a lighthouse by Bobby Malphrus of Ridgeland. These are only a few of the ex cellent paintings in the collection, which is sponsored on a non competitive basis for the purpose of illustrating the progress of art teaching in the state's schools and to encourage whatever talent may exist. The paintings include water colors, oils, temperas, block prints and etchings. They will be on dis play through February 9 and the public is invited to view, without cost, P group of art work that has "surprised and pleased" the exhi bition's sponsors very much. The .only judging that will be done is to be the selection of a number of the best paintings to form a traveling exhibit, which will be available for display in schools over the state.
