Ross). -it Happened So Fast Gamecock For Highl: The Carolina Gamecocks, rated as one of the top boxing teams in the Southern Conference, pounded out a close decision over the University of Maryland Terrapins in the Field house last Friday night. The score was 5-4. The Marylanders, reputedly much stronger than last year, lost their big chance for victory when Carolina's George, Sciambra, Davis, Gurney, and DeWitt took five con secutive points for the Gamecocks. This combination of points off Aset (those) lost by forfeiting the heavyweight fight and the un popular decision dropped by Caro lina's Davis in the light-heavy weight division. Malcolm DeWitt, in the 165 class, clinched the victory for the Birds when he pounded out a referee's decision over his oppon ent, Russell Eddy. Under new collegiate rules, a TKO is not awarded when a bout is stopped; a referee's decision is given instead. In the first bout, Johnny Stokes lost a decision to Maryland's Gerry Garbor in the 120-pound class. After the five consecutive Game cock wins, Cassidy of Carolina dropped another decision to Mary land's SIBT champion, Ronnie Ithodes. Most imp)ressive of the fights wvere the Gurney-Theofield affair anid the Sciambra-Letzer bout. Gurney, SIBT wvelter weight champ, had a little trouble making! the 147 pound weight limit, but! p)roved himself as potent as ever when he flattened his foe in the second round and was given a referee's decision when the bout Peterson Has' SLarger Foes Senior Johnny Peterson has cur rently been carrying the hopes for Coach Johnson's basketball team, and1 it looks as if he will be bur dened even more from here on out. Peterson, at six-feet, four inches, is considlered a "shorty" as far as basketball centers go. Until the Wake Forest game, however, he had scored 150 points as to 100 for his oppJosing starters, averag lug 15.0 per' game. His accuracy a41.5 per cent, tops for the team. Peterson has upped his point average to 15.8 per game and has scored 174 points while his oppos ing starters have scoredl 127. Peterson will be tested once again tonight when the Ganmecocks take on the Clemson Tigers in the lField house. Peterson will be opposedl at the center position by John McGraw who stands six-feet, six inches tall. After that, the Gamecocks will meet Furman on Jan. 29) in the Field house. Furman will put up six-feet, seven-inch Neild G;ordon, who was a big gun when the Paladins tripped the Gamecocks twice last year. After the Furman game, his opposition gets even larger. On Feb. 4 Peter son will be against Bobby Speight, a six-feet, eight incher' of North Carolina State. Then, on Feb. 13, he will face North Carolina's Paul Likini. 31-feet nine. A devastating right was the blow which floored Teofield, and after that the Gamecock scored relent lessly with lefts and iights. Sciambra, a newcomer in the Gamecock camp, took the 132 pound match by beating Jack Letzer, one of .laryland's finest, on a close decision. Combining his speed with a potent punch, Sciambra pleased the huge crowd in gaining this close decision. SIT finalist Allen George also won a very close one over the Terps' Guido Capri, a native of South Carolina, in the 125-pound match. George was awardd his decision primarily on his clean, punches which were landing rather effectively.
