What can be a worse way to start off a brand new year
than to come back to final exams and beat your brains out
over studies that just don't seem natural after a luxurious
two-week vacation (without pay, but without studies, also) ?
It's bad with most of us, but what about the basketball
players? Well, the fact is that they didn't get a very long
vacation after all.
On December 20 the team took a little trip up to the
nation's capital where it met the George Washington
Colonials in a conference game. By. now everyone should
know the story of how the Colonials handed the Gamecocks
a 107-69 defeat. The only good thing that seemed to come
of this game to the Carolinians was the fact that Forward
Joe Smith walked off with high scoring honors for the night
as he dropped in a sum total of 23 points. The defeat was
expected, but such a large score wasn't. Well, it wasn't a
very happy time for the Gamecocks as they headed for the
cold, cold hills of West Virginia for two games to be played
on December 22 and 23.
West Virginia proved too much for the victory-thirsty
cagers, so wfiile most of us were doing that last bit of shop
ping, our boys were trounced twice In a row by the boys
from the hills.
After these two games, a little vacation came up for the
battle weary Gamecocks, and things were brought to a halt
in order to celebrate Christmas.
When the year 1953 was only two days old, the team was
back on the road again, this time with better results. Facing
a reputedly stronger Virginia Tech, squad, the Gamecocks
rose to the occasion and surprised everyone by tripping the
Gobblers, 69-66, in a thriller.
Another victory was in sight when Davidson met the
travel-weary Gamecocks at Davidson. Again, to the surprise
of everyone, the Gamecocks put on a last minute spurt and
scored 20 points in the last period in downing the Wildcats
66-57.
No doubt about it; the boys must have been tired when
they came back to classes on Monday. One consolation, how
ever, is the fact that two potential Gamecock victories were
turned into realities, and the New Year at least started off
in the right direction.
The loss to Duke did not, as many may think, offset these
two victories. The team which played and lost to Duke
showed a great deal of improvement and didn't lose bad at all.

Duke Trips
Gamecocks;
Peterson Gets
23 Points
The Duke Blue Devils, looking
hard for a berth in the Southern
Conference tournament, defeated a
hard fighting Gamecock basket
ball team in the field house here
Wednesday night 76-67.
The game, in which a high
scoring Duke team turned into a
do-or-die defensive devil, was
dominated by the "Big Blue" ex
cept for a few instances in the
first and third periods when the
Gamecocks showed signs of upset
fever in their systems; in the third
period, particularly, the Birds
looked strong.
The Blue Devils, reputedly a
team which likes to run rough
shod over its opponents, was led
by Forward Bernie Janicki in the
scoring departanent, but Johnny
Peterson of the Gamecock squad
was high scorer for the night with
22 points. Janicki scored 20.
The game started at a fairly
even pace with the Gamecocks
going out front in the first three
minutes 4-2. The Blue Devils took
the lead after that, however, and
never gave it up although being
seriously threatened in the third
period when Peterson began con
necting with his now near-famous
hook shot. A jump shot by Joe
Smith just before the half pulled
the Gamecocks up and they were
behind 35-38 going into the third
quarter. The entire third period
was full of thrills with Hofferth,
Smith, and Peterson doing most
of the shooting for the Gamecocks
and D'Emilio, Janicki, and Decker
suppling the thrills for the victors.
The drawback on the Carolina
tean), however, seemed to lie in
the shooting department. The
Birds just couldn't find the range
on enough of their shots, while the
Blue Devils hit just a little more
consistently.
The loss was not a bad one for
the Gamecocks, however. Duke had
justly been rated as a 10-20 point
favorite of the Birds and Coach
Johnson's team looked much better
than they did in some of their

Carolina placed Johnny Gramling
and Leon Cunningham on the UP
All-Southern team and there was
considerable controversy over the
fact that Gamecock Don Earley
was placed on the second team
after having been placed on the
first team earlier. Defensive back,
Norris Mullis, was named on the
All-South team and on the second
All-America defensive team.
The basketball season opened
with a host of inexperienced players
downing Newberry 79-57. It was
obvious, then, that the Gamecocks
would not reach such high spots
on the court as past teams had.
Next, the Gamecocks took a lick
ing from Georgia only to come
back with a surprising victory over
Georgia Tech. Richmond set back
the Gamecocks in a close-fought
conference game 84-78. Carolina's
Peterson scored 22 in the defeat.
Next, George Washington and West
