Another Book T Havilah Babcock: 1 Chicago' To Begin 4 Biology Professors Go to Coast Four members of the University biology department staff will be guts of the Bear's Bluff Marine Laboratory on Wadmalaw Island next month on a specimen collect ing trip off the South Carolina Coast. Dr. J. T Penney, Dr. W. T. Bat son, Jr., Dr. H. W Freeman, and Dr. W. R. Kelley accepted an invitation by Robert Lunz, director of the Marine laboratory, who is now engaged in a shrimp survey of the coast The University faculty members, all of whom are currently engaged in making a survey of plants and Streem and MacPi Attend IBS Convei Ronnie Streem and Sandy Mac Pherson, WUSC station manager and announcer, respectively, at tended the Fifth Regional Inter collegiate Broadcasting System Convention at Alabama College, Montevallo, Alabama. It was held last weekend. The next convention will be held in April at the university with WUSC as host. The principal speaker at the convention was Program Director Lionel Baxter of WAPD in Bir mingham. Other speakers included faculty adIvisors andl student offi cers of participating collegiate stations. Participation in the convention was dliscouragingly small. Only three schools were able to send representatives to meet with those of the host station, WRSD. The .*. . Station BALAN BAKER Exchange Editor Any student living on campus who, for some reason or another, finds that he cannot attend the home basketball games or boxing matches may now stay in his room and listen to these sporting events over WUSC. These programs are presented with the dual purposes of, first, to benefit the students who feel they cannot attendl the events and, secondly, to give the announcing staff of WUSC some practical, first-hand experience in the diffi cult art of sports announcing. It is a generally known fact among radio people that the narra tion of athletic events is probably the most difficult field of radio work. Chase of the University of Chicago will be in residence at the University of South Carolina from January to March, Dr. Orin F. Crow, dean of the Schopl of Education, announced today. Dr. Chase will maintain liaison between the universities of Chica go and South Carolina in accord ance with a joint program recently agreed to by both institutions. Committees of both universities have been appointed to develop a long range program for the growth and improvement of the teacher education facilities and public invertebrates in the hydrogen bomb plant area, will carry collecting and preserving equipment on the marine trip in order to further the University's research program by adding to its biological collec tions. The outing, final arrange ments for which are incomplete, is expectedl to cover several days. ierson, WUSC, tion In Ala. schools were the University of South Carolina (WUSC), the Uni versity of Alabama (WALA) and Florida State University (WFSU). The number of delegates from the three schools, was fifteen, wvhich, when added to the WRSD staff, was sufficient to keep panels and discussion groups supplied with ideas. The WUSC staffers re discovered an old friend, Richard Hutto, formerly of Orangeburg and USC, a former WUSC announcer. Hutto is now special events direc tor of WFSU. Friday afternoon and evening, andl all day Saturday were filled with closely scheduled meetings, forums, andl discussions. The week end was climaxed by a Saturday evening prodluction of major selec tions of Handel's "Messiah," per formed by the ASC chorus. Break .. . these two are among the fastest sports. It takes a person with a fast mind, a definite ability to speak rapidly, and a wide knowl edge of the terminology of the sport, to broadcast either one of these events. Roth Murray Seaman and Ronnie Streem have done very creditable jobs- in doing the play-by-play descriptions of this season's basketball games and boxing matches. Murray, an old hand at broad casting Carolina sporting events, really proved his professional po tentialities with an outstanding job of the recent boxing matches. Ross Chase 9idence school services of the University of South Carolina. The program will naturally focus on the School of Education but the implications are university-wide in scope. While at the University, Dr. Chase will devote a portion of his time to the cooperative program of the two universities. The re mainder of his time will be given to sevPrRl research projects he is directing. Dr. Chase, a native of Virginia, received the A.B. and M.S. degrees from the University of Virginia, and the Ph.D. degree from the University of Chicago, where he is now serving as professor of educational administration. He has had very successful experience as a teacher and administrator in elementary and high schools of Vir ginia. He was a member of the summer faculty of the University of Virginia for several sessions. For a number of years he was secretary of the Virginia Education Association, and while still in Vir ginia received the Virginia Educa tion Award for distinguished serv ice to education in that state. Dr. Chase is director of the Education Communications Serv ice, a project sponsored by the National Association of Secretaries of State Teachers Associations and now International In scope. When the Kellogg Foundation allotted funds to make a nation-wide study of school administration, Dr. Chase was made director of the Mid-West Administration Center located at the University of Chicago for the cooperative study of school ad ministration In the midwest. "My Health Is Better In November" by Dr. Havilah Babcock, head of the univer sity English department, has now been transferred to a New York publisher and has just been reissued in a large edition. It was transferred from the original publisher, the Uni versity Press, by whom it was reprinted several times. It is being printed simultaneously in Canada and the Un:Ked States. This was the only out door book in America to be adopted by the American As sociation for the Blind and to be published in braile by the Library of Congress. Some of the essays in this col lection have been translated into French, German, Span ish, Dutch, Italian, Japanese, Swedish, Chinese, and other languages to a total of twelve. Dr. Babcock has autographed copies of his works for Bing Crosby, General Dwight Eisen hower, B. M. Baruch, and other notables. He has recently finished a series of essays for Henry Holt and Co. BSU Will Present Its Christmas Pageant Sunday Members of the Baptist Student Union of the University of South Carolina are presenting a Christ mas pageant at the Park Street Baptist Mission of which Hal Nor ton, also a Carolina student, is pastor, Sunday night, December 21 at 7:30 p.m. The highlight of the evening program which is "The Christmas Story" will be presented in pan tomine with children from the mis sion portraying the various charac ters' parts.
