PAUL PHILLIPS, Sports Editor BOB BLAKELY TOM CARR 3iBa CAll PAIL.~ PH IIL3PS Carolina's Dick Balka has joined Leon Cunningham on the list of candidates for All-American honors. The passing quarterback was named for his outstanding performance in the Virginia game, when he sparked the Gamecocks to a 21-14 win in the fourth quarter. It was Balka, a senior from South Bend, Ind., who opened the scoring gates for the Birds with a touchdown pass to end Clyde Bennett with less than six minutes remaining in the game. The Game cocks scored twice more in less than two minutes with Balka calling the Gamecock signals. A copy of the Clemson propaganda sheet, better known as "The Tiger," has drifted down from the hills. The date on page six of this masterpiece of journalism is dated October 39, 195. You can take your choice as to the actual date. The boys from the hills will do almost anything to make excuses for their suffering footballers, but in this issue they run wild. To quote, "This game (the Carolina-Clemson game) was strictly a game of luck, with the Carolina Gamecocks receiving the first lucky break to go on and win the classic." Ed.'s note-We certainly had a lucky break in that we had a better team. Is it true that Coach Enright is scheduling Clemson as a breather for the Birds next year? In referring to Carolina's try for the extra point which went wide, "The Tiger" says, "Clemson's magnificent de fensive line spoiled the try for extra point. . . ." Note-That "magnificent" line must have moved the goal posts. In another story, the Cowdet weekly tries to do a little crystal balling. In predicting the Carolina-Virginia game, they go way out on that limb in saying, "Carolina can't be as lucky against everybody as they were against Clemson. The Cavalier defensive line should have little trouble stopping the Gamecock running attack. Let's pick the Virginians over South Carolina in a Southern Conference game." At least the cow-country boys were not the only ones wrong on this score, but as to the lucky part, maybe they have never heard of Latorre, Balka, Witt, Caskey, Earley, Bennett, H. Johnson, and Co. Their seasonal average for picking winners is only .699. It might help them if they consulted Murray Seaman be fore they start picking. * * * The Carolina Biddies, under the able coaching of Billy and Paul Stephens and Stan Hamilton, defeated the Citadel JV's last Monday night in Aiken, 3119-6, in a contest for charity. Smokey Darouse got the Biddies off to a flying start when he returned the opening kickoff 95 yards for a touch down. Crystal Ball Picks Clemson, Duke, Ala.
