The holiday festivities got <
underway on Wednesday night t
with the traditional burning of the f
Tiger in front of the steps of the
State House. The students formed
in the Field House for a pep rally
and from there followed the cheer
leaders to the State House. After
the burning, the band and the
cheerleaders lead the cheering stu
dents up Main Street.
The ringing of the bell in the
Carolina Chapel, which started at
noon Wednesday, continued all of
Wednesday night and up until
noon Thursday. Fraternities were
given the responsibility of ringing
the bell because the Freshman
class was not organized. The bell
ringing has traditionally been the
duty of the Freshman class, but
fraternities undertook the project
this year.
Prior to the kickoff, the Game
cocks paused to pray as is their
custom before each game.
It was only a matter of minutes
before the hard charging Game
cocks had all of the Carolina fans

rood for 19 yards and the only
core of the game. The Gamecocks
iad a few other scoring opportun
ties, but the offense hogged down
m other attempts to cross the
riger goal line.
Clemson's deepest penetration
nto Carolina territory came in the
hird quarter when they recovered
Carolina fumble inside the 20
ard line. The Tigers moved the
all down to the 14 yard line but ,
he fighting Gamecocks stopped th
.hem there and took possession of
he ball on downs.
The real story of the game can
e found in the statistics which
;how just how much the Game
-ocks out-played the Tigers. The
Gamecocks gained 125 yards rush
ng to 103 for Clemson, 95 yards
y passing to none, 14 first downs
o five first downs for the losers.
I'he defensive team for the Game
ocks played their greatest game
)f the season as they twice stopped
clemson from picking up inches
.vhich they needed for first downs.
t was truly a victory for the
lefensive players.
The most inspiring moments in
.he game came at half time when
.he late Steve Wadiak was honored.
[he Carolina card section formed
:he number 37, Wadiak's playing
number, with a heart as a back
ground. The band down on the
rield also formed the number 37
and then played "Old Lang Syne."
It was two years ago that Caro
lina's greatest halfback, Steve
Wadiak, gained more yardage than
the entire Clemson team as the
Gamecocks tied the Tigers 14-14.
Wadiak was killed in an auto
nobile accident near Aiken last
M4arch. His jersey has been retired
lndl his shoes have been bronzed.
