The Bird Call
Tomorrow afternoon, for the second home game of the
season, the Gamecocks take on the power packed 1)uke Blue
l)evils before an expected crowd of 30,000.
The Gamecocks will be eager to avenge a 34-6 defeat that
was handed them last year by another highly rated Duke
team and to pull a major upset in topping the team that is
rated sixth in the nation. The winner of tomorrow's game
will take over, the lead in the Southern Conference standings.
Two of the South's leading passers will oppose each other
when the conference's second leading passer, Johnny Gram
ling, squares off against Duke's Worth Lutz, who is ranked
ninth. Gramling has coqgipleted 22 passes for 264 yards and
five touchdowns against Lutz's record of ten completions for
104 yards and three touchdowns. Gramling is also ranked
fifth in total offense with 301 yards.
Gamecock End Clyde Bennett will be anxious to improve
his record and remain.he top pass receiver in the conference.
Bennett has caught ten passes for '185 yards and two touch
downs.
The f inal score of tomorrow's game could easily be a lot
lower that many people think. The Blue I)evils are the top
defensive team in the conference, but the Gamecocks rank
third in total defense. Duke is second in rushing defense a nd
Carolina is third.
On the other hand, offensively Duke's rushing average
of' 267 yards per game is the fourth best in the conference,
but the Gamecocks rank fifth in total offense with 321 vards
per gane.
With all of these facts, it ought to be easy to pick a win
ner. I'll go along with Murray Seaman's crystal ball and pick
TI'elnnessee over Chattanooga.

Biddies Lose Opener
Last Saturday night, the Biddies played South Georgia
College in their first game of the season. The final score was
13-6 in favor of South Georgia, but that is not a true indica
tion of the caliber of play put on by the Biddies.
'Tle Gatecocks of the fVator, gaine e 800 yanis rush
ing while htokling the winers to only 20 yards.
Both of the winner's touchdowns came oil short passes
ito the flat, but the receivers got away for long I'1uns and
that was the ball game as far as the scoring was concernel.
The two I) pass plays for Georgia covered 40 yards and 60
yards respectively. The Biddies had miany scoring oI)portuni
ties but penalties stopped them more than the Georgians.
The lone score for the losers came on a pass into the flat
to halfback Ci'w Brazell, who ran 75 yards for the score.
Jrazell proved to be the offensive standout while A. C. l ollaar
Sstood out well otn (letfense.
