RALPH GREGORY:
Hi, Sport!
For several years college boxing has been well on its way
to suffering a kayo. A few years after the past war several
colleges in the South found boxing too expensive to continue
and they dropped it as a competitive sport. The movement
spread until the majority of colleges in this section had done
away with the game. Duke and North Carolina were among
the first to do away with boxing in the Southern conference.
- Clemson soon followed until today there are only three schools
in the conference who still have a team. Besides Carolina
they are The Citadel and Maryland. In the Southeastern
only LSU is left. Miami and Virginia, both independent
schools, make the total number other than USC having teams,
five. When Maryland and Miami announced they were con
sidering dropping boxing from their athletic program it set
up the knockout punch.
The rumor started around Columbia that Carolina had
already decided to do away with the sport so we .made a
check with Coach Rex Enright. He killed all the rumors
that the local ring sessions were over. He put the matter en
tirely up to the actions of the other schools that now have
boxing. If Miami and Maryland do withdraw the sport from
their programs it is very likely that Carolina will be forced
to do the same. The action of these two schools will deter
mine whether or not that knockout punch is delivered. With
these two out of the field there would be only three teams
left and it would be almost impossible to make up a schedule.
Enright is not anxious to do away with the mitt game i
unless forced to do so by the actions of these other schools
even though boxing is hurting other sports. The popularity
of the sport in Columbia makes it a desirable one to retain. s
So the future of lonal boxing lies in the decisions that will
s
be made hundreds of miles from Columbia.

INTRAMURAL SUGGESTION
The University of North Carolina has an intramural plan 1
that might provide a few ideas for the local intramural de
partment. Director Joe Grugan favored a ;imiiar program 1
when we talked to him several months ago with all the stu- U
dents in the state participating in a field day.
The North Carolina plans call for a sports carnival for i
the North Carolina students. More than 300 students par- F
ticipated in the gala night which was held for the 10th
C
straight year.
Included in the program were such events as foul shoot
ing, badminton, archery, table tennis, mixed volleyball, mixed
relays and bait casting. The events were entered by boys
and girls.
Trophies were awarded on a team and individual basis.
The events were run off in little more than two hours.
JUST CHECKIN' . ..
Intramural track meet has been moved up from May 1
to May 9 to avoid conflict with University Day. Softball
games scheduled for that day were also postponed. . . . Coach
Ted Petoskey's early season estimate of his pitching staff
has stood up pretty well under later games. To date the
earned run average for the entire staff is just 2.6. The most
earned runs allowed were four against Wake Forest....
Catcher Emmett Dietz, who has just begun to belt the ball,
was stunned when he slid into third base during the first
inning of the Davidson game. The base paths of the David
son field were rather well hardened, enough so to lay DietZ
out of the game. He was rushed to the Davidson infirmary,
where it was found he had only been stunned.

two were named by vote of the
team members who also selected
Paul Stephens as winner of the

Shea and Latorre are both ends,
the former an offensive man and
Latorre a defensive standout.
Stephens played offensive tackle
on the '51 team that won five and
lost four.
Coach Rex Enright praised the
