Johnny Stokes, a boy that started off the season as a bench-warmer,
is leading the Gamecock batters through the first eight games. Stokes,
who lost out in the fight for second base"got his start as a pinch-hitter
against Clemson in the first Tiger game at Orangeburg. He walked
and scored one of the two Carolina runs. The following day he started
in right field and has been the regular there ever since. He went two
for two and walked three times. At present he has a .429 average.
Emmett Dietz is the leading slugger. He has eight hits, including
four doubles and two home runs. He is hitting .296 and has 18 total
bases. He is also tops in runs batted in with eight.
The pitchers are led by Otis Rawl who had a 4-0 record before
Tuesday's game with Davidson. He had allowed only seven earned
runs in 37 innings and had four complete games. He is also tops in
strikeouts.
