USC Track Men Limbering Up For Full Season By JERRY ROLLINS The last- time South Carolina had a track team was. in '1950. That year, with a squad of only thirteen men, Carolina won the State 'Meet at Clinton and Tommy Woodlee captured firsts in the Southern Conference 100 and 220. Floyd Spence and Paul Beaty are the only two returning letter men. With their help, Coach Weams Baskin is hopeful that this year's bigger squad, as green as they may now be, shall have at tained more- skill and necessary experience by the time this season is ended. Last Saturday the U. S. C. Track Team met Camp Gordon in a prac tice meet. No score was kept, but the Carolina team beat the Army men in most of the events to which they were challenged. It's still early in the season and most of the men are not yet in top condition. The first regular meet of the season is with Clemson, here to morrow at 8:30. The pole-vaulting oI Smoky Darouse will be missed until his ankle, injured in Spring football practice, is well again. So far this year he has cleared 11'6" and is expected to do better. s Last week, "Big" Jim Gainey was invited to try his skill at track. On his first try he heaved the shot put 37 feet-not bad for a beginner. Pi Kaps Winning In Sports Field Pi Kappa Phi continued leading the race for the Campus Sports trophy. With the completion of the basketball season, the Pi Kappa have a total of 456 points, to lead the runner-up fraternity by over 130 points. Sigma Nu is in second place with 320 points, with Phi Sigma Kappa picking up in third place by virtue of more than 100 points they gained during basketball. The Phi Sigs have a total of 269 points. The fourth place spot is held down by Sigma Chi, who are just a few points behind third spot with 262 points. Fifth place is held by Kappa Alpha with 245 points, with Phi Kappa Sigma a few points behind with 235 points. Pi Kappa Alpha is the seventh fraternity in the race wvith 172 points. Sigma Alpha Ep silon is eighth with 167 points, followed by two fraternities who are fighting it out for the ninth spot. They are Lambda Chi Alpha, currently holding down the number nine spot, with 158 points and Alpha Tau Omega with 154 points. The number eleven fraternity in the race is Phi Epsilon Pt with 144 points. Sigma Phi Epsilon is twelfth with 75 points, while the unlucky number thirteen falls to Kappa Sigma. These point totals include foot ball, volleyball and basketball. Other sporting events such as swimming, track, golf and tennis will also be added to the totals be fore a winner Is finally determined. Several fraternities are hold ing onto their positions by only a few points and will find it necessary to pick up points in the other intra-mural sporting events to hold their places in the race. The All Sports trophy will be awarded to the winning fraternity during half time ceremonies of a football game next season. The trophy is awarded each year by the Intra-Fraternity Council and is a permanent trophy. Coach Baskin's thinclads are a close team that works hard every day. It's up to us to encourage and back up the boys in all ways. The events and their participants are: Javalin - Bob Drawdy, Bob Shealy and Dick Griffin. Both turned in good games during the first week of the season and will see plenty of action from here on out. The Darlington, S. C. freshmen throw right and bat right. Heyward is 6 feet and weighs 193 pounds, while Howard is 6'1" and 188 pounds. Baseball's Future Brightens Up For Carolina 'sDiamondSeason The Carolina baseball team got off to a bad start when they dropped their first two games to lDuke and Michigan State, respectively, but they came back in the second game against MS, behind the splendid pitching of Otis Raw, to win 4-1. RawI allowed the northerners only two hits as he held them in cheek throughout the game. Rawl also contributed a great deal to the winning of his own game, with a timely home run that cleared the fence in left field. The batting punch of the Gamecocks, which has been greatly missed in the first few games, finally showed itself as they got nine hits against State. Coach Petoskey finally saw his power hitters getting on base. Hofferth, Dietz and Spotts got their first base hits in this third game of the season. The Tunstall brothers, Heyward and Howard, turned in finae pitching performain.es and should be rated behind Raw. With the hitting showing signs of improving and the pitch ing becoming tight, Coach Petswkey should be coming up with a lot more winners than many first thought. The Pi Kapps defeated a stubborn team in the Rinky Dinks, the undefeated champions of the independent league, by the score of 47 to 39. Forward Harry Steward led the winners with 15 points, while Ollie dropped in 11 points for the losers. The winning Pi Kapps became the campus champions. The season was tough for both winners and the defeated. It took a well-rounded ball club to win and the victorious Pi Kapps showed that they had what it took. The champions had speed and height which they used to their advantage. It was these advantages, plus their scoring ability, which enabled them to finish the season as cam pus champions. In the playoff game for the fraternity league championship, Pi Kappa Phi defeated Phi Sigma Kappa by the score of 42 to 31. The Phi Sigs finished up the game with the substitutes in the game, while I the Pi Kaps did an imitation of a i well-known professional basket t ball team.
