How Many
Employees in the
Electric Industry?
Business-managed, privately-owned
electric utilities employed an esti
mated 290,000 persons as of the end
of 1949. This was an increase of
89,000 over the five years previous.
Average employment in 1949 was
about 44 per cent higher than at
the wartime low point in 1944, when
manpower drains had reduced the
number employed to about 201,000.
Your South Carolina Electric and
Gas Company employed more than
1,700 as of July 1951. Total pay
roll for the month of July 1951 was
ahmost half a millionr dollars. This
privately-owned utility offers advan
tages which have held the loyalty of
its employees; nine of them have
bees with the Company 40 or more
years, 156 have worked here 25 to
40 years, and 86 have service records
of 20 to 25 years. Our oldest em
ployee in terms of years with the

Sports quiz
Last week's Sportsquiz was a
little too tough for Carolina men.
We had only one answer. George
Trotter had the three right men in
Mickey Cochrane, "Ole Horse'
Radbourne and Lon Warneke.
This week we have another quiz
concerning baseball. Answer these
and receive two passes to the Caro
lina Theatre.
(1) Who was the "Wild Horse
of the Osage"?
(2) What major league ball club
has never finished in the cellar?
(3) Who was the first player
picked in the baseball Hall of
Fame?
Get at least two of these answers
to win. Send your answers to
Gamecock Sports, Box 79, Campus.
