Carolina Alumni Meet For Joint Dinner March 11 Carolina graduates from Green ville and Pickens counties had a joint dinner on Tuesday, March 11, at the Elks Club in Greenville. Professor Daniel Hollis, of the history dep.prtment, spoke on the history of the university up to 1865, the stibject of his book re cently pub.lihed by the University Press. .efn B. Bates, state treas urer, and president of. the Alumni Association. attended the meeting and Ralph Lewis, executive secre tary of the group, was present. Remson l3auknight, of Easley, vice-president of the circuit, ar ranged the program and presided. Movies of the 1951 Carolina-Clem son game 'were shown to the more than 50 alumni who attended. Pharmacy Student Association Plans Trip To Detroit Two movies were shown at the monthly meeting of the American Pharmaceutical Association, which met Wednesday in Room 105, Le Conte, at 7:30 p. m. The movies were "The Fight Against Cancer" and "The Collect ing, Processing and Using of Blood." After the movies, plans were made to attend a trip to Parke-Davis Co. in Detroit, and to have a spring social for the whole pharmacy school, which will be either a banquet or a picnic. The Faculty Adviser is Professor J. E. Plaxco, Jr. The officers for this year are John Holland, Colum bia, president;- Odell Mathews, Bennettsville, vice-president; Lois Nichols, Nichols, secretary; and Frances Fair, Greeleyville, treas urer. Salvatore To Serve As ROTC Inspector Lt. Col. Alexander R. Salvatore, assistant professor of air science and tactics, and director of training at the university, has been selected to serve on an inspection team which will visit ROTC units at selected colleges and universities in the southern and southeastern states. This inspection is a part of the annual i pcaj.ioia etvCd U uy all ROTC units which is generally carried out from April through June. Col. Salvatore will serve on one of four teams for the 14th Air Force, and will inspect the units at 13 schools, including the University of Alabama, Mississippi and Mississippi State, the Univer sity of Tennessee, Georgia Tech, the University of the South, and Memphis State. Inspections, which take about three days, are for training, ad ministration, and supply. Col. Sal vatore is in charge of training in spection for his team. He will leave on March 26 and return on May 21. Lt. Col. Sears To Speak In Charlotte Lt. Col. Herbert E. Sears, pro fessor of air science and tactics at the University of South Carolina, and Captain Harold Davis, also of the university air science depart ment, will visit tshe 9940th Plane Volunteer Air Reserve Training Squadron in Charlotte, N. C., Mon day, March 10. Col. Sears will speak to the group onl new concepts of the Air Force reserve officers training corp program. Immediately following Col. Sear's address, Captain Davis will give a short demonstration of some of the training methods em ployed in the Air Science curricula at the university. Gene Shaw Will Head New Club A new club has been started on the campus! The Foil and Ep4e Club has been formed in an effort to revive the chivalrous art of fencing. Gene Shaw, of Charleston, has been elected president; Jack Rast, of Columbia, vice-president; and Flora Jefferies, of Chapin, has been chosen secretary. The purpose of the club Is to teach each member to fence. They have a regular meeting every other week, and practice in the gym once a week. By next year they expet to be able to fence teams from other schools. At the present time there are about 15 members in the group, and persons interested are invited to join by contacting any of the officers. Williamson, director of the Music Department. Applications must be sent to the university Music Department be fore March 29 for these scholar ships which cover one year's tuition in applied music and have a mone tary value of $130 each. Faculty scholarships now offered include two in piano, one in voice, one in organ, one in stringed in struments (violin, viola, cello and double bass) and one in wind in struments. Delta Omicron, national women's music fraternity, is offering a scholarship in applied music which is open only to incoming freshman women, and Phi Mu Sinfonia, music fraternity for men, is offering a scholarship to male students enter ing in the fall. The scholarships, which are available only to students planning to major in music or music edu cation, are for freshman students entering the universiiy in the fai of 1952. Each candidate will be allotted 12 minutes playing time and can choose the compositions to be performed. These auditions will be in Lieber College and the de cisions of the judges will be final.
