Coach Weems Baskin's call for
track was answered last week by
25 candidates. Although he has
only three returning lettermen
from his 1950 squad (Carolina did
not have a team in '51) Coach
Baskin is pleased at the interest
shown in track. He said, "This is
the most interest shown in track
since I have been here." Even
though the squad may be short on
experience it shows plenty of spirit
and hustle.
Coach Baskin said that it is not
too late for anyone who is inter
ested in track to come out. Track
practice is at :3 o'clock every after
noon.
The freshman rule has been
waived this year and as a result
Carolina will field a green team.
Last year freshmen were ineligible.
This plus the loss of twelve letter
men from the '50 squad prevented
Carolina from having a team.
Paul Stephens, shotput and dis
cus thrower; Floyd Spence, quar
Hlowar
Howard Collins, sop)homore froi
Winnsboro, has a record of fiv
wins and one loss with the Gam<
cock boxing team, coached by Jet
Alderman. Collins's one loss we
by one point.
Collins fought with the Winn:
boro Royal Cords for five years b<
fore coming to Carolina. He ha
100 fights and went to the quart<
finals in New York in 1949.
Collins is majoring in physica
education and hopes to put thisi
use in a recreational capacity. IF
decided to come to Carolina b<
cause "the university has alwas
had a good team, and the coac
teaches his men the knack of boy
ing."
Collins seems to think that Car<
lina's team this year is the bes
with whom he has ever fought. Th
boys are the best as far as fighi
ers and as sports In every way -
gentlemen through and through.
Colmnn stated that Coach Aider

ii Collins has one of the best lef

h Collins should develop into ona
