last Friday night at The Citadel.
The score was 6 for the Gamecocks
'and 2 for The Citadel.
Allen George won all his rounds
with -Lewis Lueders with a score
of 10-7, 10-9, and 10-8. George
sted his left effectively throughout
the fight, but came - in with his
right whenever it could be used to
advantage. He beat his man pretty
badly. It was a fairly easy match
for the Gamecock boxer.

ous left with an occasional effec
tive right. He won an easy de
cision, and his footwork looked
much better.
Chuck Davis won over Wallis
Putnam with a scre of 10-9, 10-9,

and he moved around in his usual
style. There was a good bit of

not usual in Davis, who is a
superior boxer. Last week the im
pression was given that Davis was
knocked down; this was a mistaken
idea. Davis lost his footing and
slipped down. .
Emmett Gurney started fast in
his victory over Mikb Coppola in
the 147-pound bout. The scoring
of the rounds was 10-9, 10-4, 9-10.
Gurney threw a low blow in the
first round; the next blow he threw
the referee called low and took a
point. This was not low. Midway
through the first round Gurney
caught Coppola with an overhand
right and dropped him for a count.
Coppta- got gad finishedthe
round though, 'which was almost
over. In the second round Emmett
got the best of him and took the
steam out of him. The third round
was another dlugfest, with Gurney
beating him on the inside. Coppola
won this round.
Don Fortner was decisioned by
Dan Cronin In the 155-pound match.
The scoring went 9-10, 10-10, and
10-10. It was a very close match.
Fortner was fighting one of The
Citadel's best boxers. Next to Gur
ney's fight it was the most excit
ing. Fortner looked the best he has
in the ring this year In this fight
against Cronin.
Howard Collins b e a t Don
Shriner with a score of 10-7, 10-7,
and 10-9. Collins went to the mid
section and weakened his man. In
the second round he almost knocked
Shriner out on the ropes with a
straight right to the head. This
was one of his best fights. He is
one of the top-notch boxers on the
team.
asiywas deciaioned by Bill
Baldwin, Citadel's captain, in the
179-pound bout. The score was
9-10, 9-10, and 10-10. Cassidy's
right was too short until the last
round when it started to connect.
lHe was fighting a left-handed man.
Cassidy wili be coming up soon
with the good experience he Is
having. This should have been a
draw at least.
Chuck Spann won his fight with
a score of 10-9, 10-8, 'and 10-7.
Hie was matched with Charles Har
vey in the unlimited class. Spann
looked good and he landed some
good rights. His footwork .was
working. He used speed in his
punches and in his footwork. His
apponent w a a twenty pounds
heavier than he.

Don Barton faces a terrific re
building job for his tennis team
this yer, having only two men re
turning from last year's squad
which won seven and lost five
matches. Murray Seaman and
George Clauson are the veterans.
Any new students who want to
try out for the team should con
tact Dow Barto, at the Univer
sity News Service in Lieber Col.
lew.
A schedule is now being com
posed and workouts have already
begun in preparation for the first
match on March 12.
Missing from last year's team
will be such standouts as Ray Long,
Number 3 man and George Roth.
So far only a few students have
turned out to fill these vacancies.
