USC( Tar Heels Hold Heightl Advantage By RALPH GREGORY Sports Editor Needing at least two more wins for a playoff berth Carolina's Gamecocks take the road Tuesday to engage North Carolina's Tar Heels after a week at home. Both teams will be working overtime for the win since it may mean a bid to the tourney for one of them. The Gamecocks entertained two of the top teams in the country this week. George Washington and Furman. They won their seventh game in a row Tuesday night with a heart-stopping 78-76 decision over GW. Last night they at tempted to avenge an earlier loss to the Hurricanes. .Johnny Peterson poured in 22 points against the Colonials and for the second straight game made the deciding point as the Birds ran their conference mark to 6-2. Peterson made eight of the 16 foul shots caged by Carolina. Dwane Morrison was second in scoring with 20 points. North Carolina will present a team that has been a great flop after a red-hot start. In their second game of the season the Tar Heels ran rough-shod over a Fur man team that has become one of the top squads in the conference. Since that time, however, UNC has been getting its bumps in car load lots and almost has to win this game to make the playoffs. Pacing the Tar Heels has been < New Jersey freshman Al Lifson. Lifson, a 6-foot 2-inch forward, had scored 272 points in the first 19 games to average better than 14 per game. Lifson has been used a great deal as a substitute. how ever. The two regular forwards are Vince Grimaldi and Jack Wallace. These men rank second and third in the Tar Heel scoring derby. Grimaldi is even six feet and Wal lace six-for. The center slot is divided be tween six-nine Paul Likins, a freshman from Elkhart, Ind., and Jippy Carter, six-four junior. Captain Howard Deasy and Bob Phillips fill in at the guard posi tions to round out the starting five. Prior to Wednesday night's game with West Virginia the Tar Heels had a 6-5 conference record. They have games with The Citadel and Furman this weekend. The Tar- Heels will have the height advantage over the Game cocks but Carolina will have the speedier team and presents a bet ter shooting five. The lineups: Pos. Freshmen are eligible under present Southern Conference regu lations, and they, plus anyone else with previous tennis experience, are urgedl to ireport to the meeting. St. .agers. Intramural : Season Begi Intramural basketball will begin Monday, according to a statement issued by the intramural office last Monday. The season will end with playoffs about March 20. Two leagues are planned in both Independent and Fraternity divi sions. There will be five teams in each Independent league with six teams in one frat league and seven in the other. Each team will play the others in its league one time with the two top outfits in each league entering the playoffs. The intramural office also an nounced that it needed referees for the basketball games. Any student wishing to referee should get in contact with the intramural office in the basement of the gym. The referee's equipment will be fur nished by this office and the of ficials will also be paid. Basketball schedules are now available at the intramural office. Team managers are requested to drop by the office and pick up their cop.y today. Morrison has totaled 348 and has averaged 20.6. Johnny Peterson, big hook-shot artist, has made the greatest climb in point average. Peterson has been over the 16-point mark for the last six games and has in creased his total to 225 points, second only to Morrison. His aver age for the season is 14.1. He is leading the team in rebounds and has more than 30 assists. Peterson has the best shooting average on the team, having hit nearly 45 per cent of his shots from the floor. Don Cox and Mickey Best, the two playmakers for the Gamecocks are running neck and neck for the third position in the scoring col umn. Cox has 148 points to Best's 144 but the former has played in two more games than Best. Cox has nearly 80 assists to rank high nationally in that depart ment. Best has the top free throw mark with a 78 per cent mark. With seven games left to play the Gamecocks had scored 1,210 uoints as a team.
