The Gamecocks are still t trying to pull above the :500 mark 1 for the season and will rely on their sharp shooting ace Dwane Morrison to help dump the Tech sters. Morrison was second in the con- t ference scoring race before Tues day night's game against Clemson and will be trying to better his mark in tomorrow's league clash. The VPI team edged last year's Gamecocks by four points when they entertained the Birds in a single game. They lack last year's star Tex Tillson, however, who led the team in scoring and paced the Tech win over Carolina. Tillson was a 6'6" center who got most of the rebounds and points. VPI has a mediocre record for its first few games and will rate as slight underdogs for the clash. "Pete" Peterson will get the starting nod at center since he has shown great strides in improving his rebound work and scoring. De pending a great deal on a hook shot he rolled in 23 points against Furman and added 13 more against Georgia. He took over the rebound lead for the Bird squad and was particularly impressive as a floor man. Guard Don Cox, too, got hot against Furman and poured in 21 GRAYSON'S Style Headquarters For Men 1347 Main St. Phone 2.6714 Roblee Shoes Catalina Sweaters Enro Shirts Berle Slacks Hickok Belts Interwoven Hosiery iving exitre Remember the mid-forties, when "The Hamp's'' frenzied showmanship lommed the dance halls with couples too excited to danceS Listen for that splashy vitality on these erdier sides. J a,smy uasa How did the Electric Industry Get Its Start? Although experiments with elec tricity had been made ever since 600 B. C., the industry was not firmly established until 69 years ago. On September 4, 1882, Thomas A. Edison operated the first central electric generating plant on Pearl Street in New York City. On that historic day, 59 customers received electricity for their new incandescent lamps (which Edison had first dem onstrated in October of 1879). Four teen months later, 508 customers' houses had been wired, and 12,732 lamps were on the circuit. Edison's central station proved so sound that it is the only type which survives today. The Pearl Street plant required 10 pounds of coal to pro duce a 'kilowatt hour; while in the arc-lighting stations of the day, as much as 30 pounds of coal were needed. Today the most efficient plant requires les than % of a pound of coal to produce one kile watt hour of electricity. Under America's free enterprise system the electric industry has grown tremendously through the de termination, faitM and intelligence of many men. SOUTH CAROLINA ELECTRIC & GAS CO.
