Sigma Chi Takes
Independent L

With action in full swing in both
leagues the Intramural program is
beginning its second week- of vol
leyball competition this week with
about another month of playing on
tap.
In Fraternity League No. 1 Phi
Sigma Kappa took Phi Epsilon Pi
in three hard fought games, 15-11,
13-15, and 15-10. Sigma Chi
romped to their second straight
victory with Kappa Alpha the
losers by the scores of 15-8 and
15-6. Sigma Alpha Epsilon came
back, after going down before
Sigma Chi earlier in the week, to
stop Phi Epsilon Pi by the scores
of 15-10 and 15-11.
Across the way in Fraternity
League No. 2 Pi Kappa Phi set Pi
Kappa Alpha back by identical
scores of 15-9, 15-9. Also victorious
was Phi Kappa Sigma who bested
Lambda Chi, 15-7 and 15-12. Sigma
Nu came into the winning column
by barely squeaking by Pi Kappa
Alpha, 16-14, 15-5, and 15-7.
The very Independent League got
under way on October 4th with two
games on the day's agenda. Ten.
24% had a tough time with a sur
prisingly strong Compass & Chart
but the latter finally succumbed by
9-15, 15-8, and 15-8 tallies. Ten. 1
& 5 forfeited a game to Maxcy
Second due to the fact that they
did not find time to show up.
The next day found the "RO"
boys stopping Ten. 9 by the scores
of 15-9 and 15-11. The Sigma Ep
silon club whipped the American
Society of Mechanical Engineers in
two games but the scores were not
available by the Intramural office.
According to them the score is not
given or the two teams played
twenty-one point games instead of
Che rugular fifteen points.

Last week's Sportsquiz had two
winners but due to the fact that
"Doodle" Munn came up with "the
firstest the mostest" he is the win
ner, but credit must also be given
to J. W. Bilas who also submitted
the correct answers.

Alonzo Stagg ("The Grand Old

Drawd Proves
Need Spark
As Bird 'ullback

Bobby Drawdy, ace fullback, is
our Gamecock in the spotlight this
week. Drawdy came to Carolina
in the fall of 1930 having the repu
tation of being an outstanding
football player, and has more than
lived up to it so far.
While playing his high school
football at Summerville high,
Bobby was placed on all-star teams.
He made all-South Carolina in 1948
and 1949, plus playing in the
Shrine Bowl in 1949. The greatest
achievement that he made in high
school was being picked on All
Southern and All-American high
school football teams in 1949.
As a freshman he carried the
grunt of the attack on the Biddy
team. He played offensive fullback
and defensive linebacker. Against
the Clemson freshmen he made the
longest run of the year for a Biddy
by galloping 85 yards.
This year he is playing first 1
string offensive fullback for the
varsity squad. To date he has aver
aged about 9 yards per . carry, 1
which is tops among the Gamecock
backs. Against Duke, Drawdy
broke away for 42 yards to score
the only Carolina touchdown. In
the Carolina victories over The
Citadel and Furman, Drawdy broke
away for several long runs, includ
ing a 52-yard run against the
Purple Hurricanes last week.
Drawdy's play at fullback has
filled a big gap that appeared in
the Bird offense last year when
Chuck Presioso injured his knee in
spring practice and was unable to
play regnlarly.
Bobby is not strictly a football
player but is also' a baseball
catcher. He caught on the fresh
man nine last year and played in
the Eastern Carolina League dur
ing the summer.
If he continues at his present
rushing rate he will end up with
a greater rushing total than Steve
Wadiak had in his first year. The
possibility of using him on defense,
however, may cut his offensive
play. His one weakness seems to
be his blocking. With this strength
ened he may be on his way to more
all-teams than he made in high
school.

Tar Heels Rely
Featuring Weir
Carolina's Gamecocks, fresh from
a 21-6 win gver Furman, travel to
Chapel Hill, North Carolina, this
weekend for the annual Battle of
the Carolinas. The University of
North Carolina will host the Game
cocks in Chapel Hill tomorrow
afternoon. This will be the first
road game of the season for the
Birds.
Steve Wadiak, who gained 147
yards rushing against Furman will
be the chief offensive hope of the
Carolina eleven against UNC to
morrow. Wadiak averaged more
than 6 yards ppr carry against
Furman and scored twice. He set
up the final Bird touchdown with
s brilliant run after pulling in a
Dick Balka pass.
The rest of the running offense
will fall on the shoulders of Hootfe
[ohnson and Bobby Drawdy, with
Bob Korn and Gene Wilson to re
leve. Both Johnson and Drawdy
an well against Furman.
The passing will be left to
Fohnny Gramling, whose aerial ef
orts against Furman were not up
o his display against The Citadel.

The Tar Heels will provide one

his year. The two losses were to
3eorgia and Texas. The latter beat

iictory was over N. C. State, 21-0.
The Tar Heels lost several key
men last year but, have come up

Hansen and backs Billy Hayes and
Dick Bunting.
UNC has 25 returning lettermen
to fill the gaps left by these losses.
Sixteen of these men played regu
larly last year and a bumper crop
of sophomores will strengthen the
team. Heading the list of returnees
is Joe Dudeck, captain and 195
pound guard. Tackles Dalton Ruf
fin and Bill Kuhn, along with ends
Banny Walser and Bill O'Brien,
and backs Bob (Goo Goo) Gantt,
Ernie Liberati, B u d Wallace,
Chalmers Port and Dick Weiss are
among the top returning lettermen.
The standout of the newcomers
is tailback Billy Williams who is
living up to his pre-season rating.
The running attack of the Tar
Heels is expected to be much
stronger than last year when the
NC men won 14-7. The passing is
slightly weaker than last year but
is good enough to keep the Game
cocks worried.
The Tar Heels have a wide va
riety of plays. They run from three
formations but mostly use' the
single wing. They also have a va
riety of plays from the "T." The
short punt formation is used for
short bucks and delayed laterals.
