RALPH GREGORY:
Hi, Sport!
For five minutes last Saturday night the Gamecocks woke
up and played some pretty good football. Then after taking
a 14-0 lead they relapsed into their old way of not caring
enough to play their hardest. With the snap and hustle
they showed in the first quarter they could easily have run
The Citadel all the way back to Charleston. It only proveA
our contention that they have, potentially, one of the better
teams in the South.
As it happened they were outplayed entirely in the second
half. The blocking was no better than that displayed against
I)uke. The defensive line played its worst game in the past
few years.
There was, of course, some improvement over the previous
week's massacre. The pass defense was 100 per cent better
than against Duke. Not until the last few minutes of the
game was Buddy Friedlin able to complete a pass and he
wound up with only three completions.
The pass offense was practically flawless compared to the
aerial attacks that the Birds have put up in the last dozen
or so games. The big reason for the improvement was Johnny
Gramling, the Orangeburg lad who has taken the regular
quarterback position. Johnny threw 14 passes and all but one
was perfect. He completed eight of them and threw the others
to their marks but the ends were rather slippery fingered
and unable to hold them.
FURMAN TOMORROW
This week another team comes to town with the idea of
upsetting the Gamecocks and again there could be a good
chance of them doing it. Furman has reportedly one of its
strongest teams since long before the war. They have been
beaten twice but they are playing one of their roughest
schedules in many years. They beat P C in their season opener
:9-0 then lost to Washington, and Lee and Virginia. They
looked extremely good in the game against Virginia last
week.
Their biggest threat is a hard running, shifty backfield
that compares favorably with that of the Gamecocks. Fresh
man Halfback Russell Sutton averaged better than eight
yards in the win over P C and returned one kick 93 yards
for a touchdown. Their other halfback is hard-hitting Sonny
I orton who has been around for three yearu and is the real
backbone of the Furman eleven.
Gene Pedrick is the quarterback. Although not a strong
Passer lie is a goodl ball handler and a fine runner. Jim Piner
rounds out the backfield. He is a fleet fullback who averaged
7.7 yards in their opener.
This Furman team is onie that can easily cdump the Game
cocks tomorrow if the Birds let down for a single instant.
There was dlecided imp)rovement last week. Tomorrow we'll
be looking for as much or more improvement.

row afternoon at Carolina Stadium
in the USC Home-coming game. A
crowd of more than 20,000 is ex

together. Game time is 2:30.
The Hurricane will be all primed
to ruin the Bird's intended show
for the home folks. They have a
hard-running backfield and a
=trong defensive line. The upset
minded Furman team will be out
for a repeat of its 1949 surprise
win over the Birds. They won that
year. 14-7. Last year the Game
cocks won 21-6 to take a 17-16 lead
in the series. One game ended in a
tie.
An explosive backfield will be
the main weapon of the Furman at
tack. They have two good break
away runners in Sonny Horton and
Russell Sutton. Horton is a senior
who has sparked the Purple's at
tack for three years. Sutton is a
first-year man but has shown
plenty of running ability in his
first three games. He went 93
yards for a touchdown in his first

The Citadel last week when the
Birds won, 26-7.
Carolina will go into the game
a one-touchdown favorite. They
have been stressing passing and
downfield blocking in this week's
workouts. Blocking was noticeably
absent in the first two games.
The squad will probably be in
top shape physically since no one
was seriously injured in the game
with the Bulldogs.
