Carol: USC BoxE First Gamecock Bout At Home To Be At 8 By GEORGE LaBRUCE The University of South Caro lina boxing team will fight its first home matches tomorrow night at eight o'clock in the Field house, when it takes on The Citadel's battling Bulldogs. Exhibitions will highlight the affair in three classes, with eleven or twelve fights in all being on the card. Carolina will be aiming for its second victory of the season. It has been defeated once, while Cita del has yet to win a match, and would like to improve its average. The Citadel lost to Virginia 5-3 in its opening matches, to Mary land 5-3 and to powerful LSU by a score of 6-2. USC was also loser to the Tigers by a 6-2 count, with the margin of victory being three very close fights. Carolina won its opening battles from Virginia by a tally of 5-3. By statistics, this ranks the Gamecocks as favorites. The Blue and White squad is young and inexperienced for the most part, but under the expert coaching of Citadel's Matty Mat thews, they should give a good ac count of themselves. In recent years, the Battery Boys have not lost to Carolina, and this too, is a record they want to preserve. Probable line-up for the Citadel will be something like the follow ing, which is the way they went against LSU. At 125, they may send Herbert Wilcox to fight Caro lina's Pete Campassi; at 180, Bill McKay against Grady Decell or Gregg Hitopoulas; at 135, Vince Billingsley. to meet Chuck Davis. Hugh Cotton will probably go at 145, to face Carolina's sophomore flash, Emmett Gurney; Captain George Campson, 155, will get his T Champion Jim Gallagher, at 165, endless flurries that ed ' Douglas. light heavy spot, powerful Bryant Johnson conies up against USC's Chuck Spann, who won from LSU by a TKO, and heavy weight Bill Baldwin is the likely match for Louis Harrelson, Caro lina heavy. In addition to the regular eight fight card, fans will witness some top flight boxing in three planned exhibition matches, these being in the 165, 145, and 130 pound classes. Coach Jess Alderman said he intended matching Howard Col lins, 165, wvith Ted Bobodas of the Citadel's team; and Don Fortner would fight Danny Croner, a wel terweight. Alderman will send Allen George against a Blue and White contender in another exhibition, but it was not disclosed wvho the boxer would be. The exhibitions will be fought by freqjpien boxers, who ordinarily dQtt Wht in the dual matches. .,,'e-entire Gamecock squad was ready" a few days ago, not having fought during all of last week, except in training matches. In brief this is the story of James Walker Slaughter's rise to one of the outstanding basketball players of all time in the state and Southern conference. Every time he connects with a basket, a new state individual scor ing record for one person by a South Carolina college student is established. The old record, 1,050 points set by another university player, Henry Martin, In 1948-49, hvas passed in the game with Long [sland university. Slaughter's record has not been an easy one to compile. Up until this year he was about the only scoring threat on' the Carolina team. Opposition coaches would set up their defense around him with two and three players guarding him. This year has been different though. Slim Jim has had the aid of two junior college transfers, Dwane Morrison, who has a 14.2 average and Mickey Best with an 8.8 average, 6 foot, 2 Inch Johnny Peterson from the freshman team with a 9.9 average and Don Cox, the only other player from last year's varsity team, with an 8.8 average. South Carolina through Wednesday was tied for Third Week Of Baseball Practice Ends Team Shapes Up Slowly Coach Ted Petoskey reports that the baseball team is "shaping up slowly" as it ends the third week Df practice. Coach Petoskey points out that many handicaps have slowed the practice. A flu epidemic on the campus has caused several players to miss practice. Also, the squad, because of bad weather, has been held indoors un til this week. The squad is also composed almost entirely of rookies. Only four players of last year's starting team are back this year. They are Gus Allen, catcher; Bobby Rogers, centerfielder; and Bill Camp and Grady Faircloth pitchers. Although the team is in the "embryo stage," Petoskey showet confidence in this year's pitching staff. He said that it is one of those that every college coach de ires. An operation on Camp's arm last 3ummer has turned out to be sue :essful and he should have a good eason, Petoskey reports. Added to Camp and Faircioth are twc r.ookies who are looking good. Carolina's third contribution to the All-State team,. Don Cox, has averaged 8.3 for 23 games.
